I took a course in ASL, earlier this year, and get e-mails from my former teacher about ASL events, and such... She forwarded me one, inviting me to a "deaf coffee klatch," from a deaf married couple, where people get together to practice ASL and just meet-up. I hesitated, since I didn't know anyone there, but I had no excuse; it was held at the Dunkin' Donuts just a couple of miles from me. I was so glad that I went. The people were really lovely; 15 showed up, about a third of them deaf. And I sat with two really nice hearing women who interpreted for me, were there to practice signing. (I was worried, since speaking wasn't allowed...):scared:
It's held every month and they asked me if I'll be back and I said I would. It was such a great experience. I wish that deaf people would realize that they're in great demand, LOL, since hearing people need to practice ASL... And they were all such nice people. I made a friend whose father brought her a necklace from Egypt, with her name on it, and I have one, as well. And the man who organized the group asked me if I had a sign name, offered to give me one. I was very flattered... :D
