I start my first ASL class next week

I'm nervous about it. It's a two day a week class. I'm taking it at Berkeley Community College. Another poster in this form said great things about the program there. It used to be known as Vista Community College.

I'm going to be fully deaf in about five years-genetic deterioration of the auditory nerves

My mother, who is also deaf, doesn't sign and only reads lips. I want to be able to communicate when the time comes.

You should try to find some deaf clubs to participate to increase your exposure to the deaf world.
