Has anyone found resources for learning lip-reading?

(I believe it's now called "speech-reading".) I am in major 'burbs outside of the major city of Los Angeles, and I cannot find any resource for learning lip-reading.

I had interpreted that to mean that like learning a foreign language, you can not easily learn it when you are no longer a child. However, last year, I met a man in his 70s, who said he learned it in less than a year. He was able to hear vowel sounds to some extent with a hearing aid but he used lip-reading for the consonant sounds. He said he learned it at classes given at night from a teacher who is 35 miles away from where I am.

I have an extremely excellent (and expensive) hearing aid, properly adjusted, and I still can hardly hear with it.

1. I wasn't aware this was taught

I've been reading lips for nearly 35 years. It is a skill that I have worked on for a long time. But I never thought of classes or a course. It is something developed over a long period of observation, trial and error.

I began wearing hearing aids several years ago when I realized that without my secretary at managers meetings I was missing a lot of what was going on around me. I was focused on one speaker at a time and missing some of the side conversations. I relied on the notes taken during these sessions to fill in the blanks.

Since I've been wearing the hearing devices I've noticed that I don't spend as much time reading lips as I used to. But the skill is an excellent way to help in comprehension. I remember that when I first started wearing them my brain was not used to processing sounds. Some of them would startle me. Now when I hear someone talking I am able to face them and supplement the aids with lip reading. Before I would miss the conversations I didn't make a visual on.

2. lip reading

I think the Captioned Media Program has videotapes or DVDs on lip reading. It's also possible your local library might have videotapes on this.

3. Try practicing with the volume down on your tv

News might be the best because they are usually going to be facing directly at you.

It might help to understand that the context of your conversation will determine which word(s) are being spoken.

4. There's actually a game

That I used to play when I was younger. It's called Read My Lips! (They had a children's version called Read My Lips, Kid!)

I enjoyed beating my sister at the game as I got better and better at reading lips.
