Everyone is obviously looking forward to November 2008 - and rightfully so, with not only the White House race, but Congressional and even state races on tap, and the future.
However, before that we must work on this year's elections. Your commmunity will likely hold elections for mayor, city council, school board, or ballot proposals this year.
Next week many Michigan voters will have the opportunity to elect new school board members and perhaps pass or defeat funding proposals. Of course in my hometown rarely do even 5% turn out in a school board election.
Given the low turnout we often see in odd-year elections, motivating people to vote is very important in these types of elections. Today's School Board members, city councillors, and mayors are tomorrow's state legislators and Congressmen. This means we must ensure that the people who hold these offices are progressives of integrity whom we can trust. There are a couple signs in my front yard declaring my support for two School Board candidates.
If we truly want to fix our political system, that fix must come from the ground up. That means supporting candidates who are running for office this year.
