2. Maybe it's just how recent it is, but I think Iraq is a worse blunder than Vietnam.

Or at least that's how it feels right now. Of course Vietnam got 58,000 Americans killed, compared to the approximately 4500 who will have died by the time we, inevitably, get run out of Iraq by President Moqtada al-Sadr in April 2008. But Vietnam was always a side show in the Cold War, a repeat of a sorta successful strategy from Korea simply misapplied. Center stage was always the confrontation over Europe, which Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon all got right. In the war against fundamentalist Islam, Iraq really is center stage--a center stage that we more or less created, paid for, and then handed over to the enemy so that they could simultaneously discredit us and train their troops for futher assaults on the our allies.
