In this video, Senator Edwards discusses his address that he will give on Sunday, at the historic Riverside Church in Harlem, in which he will call on members of the House and Senate to take a stand and block funding of Bush's escalation of the war in Iraq.

Nearly 40 years ago, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. announced his opposition to the war in Vietnam from the same pulpit. King urged Americans to speak out against the war, declaring that "Silence is betrayal."

SPEAK OUT with Senator Edwards and honor the memory of Martin Luther King by signing the petition to block funding for escalation and by calling your Senators directly. Sign the petition here: http://www.johnedwards.com/

Watch a live webcast of Senator Edwards speaking at Riverside Church at 4 PM EST on Sunday, January 14: http://www.theriversidechurchny.org/news/article.php?id=128

3. Edwards is really leading the way with blocking funding
Blocking funding is the only way to put a stranglehold on Bush and was used to intiate an end to the Vietnam war.

Congressional leaders will have to weigh whether they want to try to go further by using their budgetary power to try to block the troop escalation. There is ample precedent. Beginning in 1970, Congress used funding limits to restrict U.S. troop strength in Vietnam and speed an end to that war.

6. Funding the war is abandoning the troops to the whims of Bush and his
assorted crazies.

5. Will he repeat the words "The greatest purveyor of violence in the world
today is my own government"? Just as true today as when King said them april 4, 1967.

I am glad that Edwards is speaking out. It takes courage to remind america of that speech. The "I Have a dream speech" was very beatiful, but the words in the "Silence is Betrayal" are still so contemparary as to cause some discomfort.

A politician willing to cause discomfort is a refreshing thing.

15. Yes, eloquently said.
And true, it is very refreshing to see a candidate who has the courage to be honest.

12. "Empower The People"
A perfect place and time for this address. Edwards is a true leader, with enough courage to tell the truth. He has faith in the american people to understand the ramifications of the current madness of this administration.

18. NOT packaged..
I agree catchawave. Edwards isn't merely parroting soundbites that have been crafted by some political strategy team who has done countless focus groups to vet every word. It comes naturally to him to simply speak the truth.

Even when he does a formal speech, it's apparent that he owns what he says. He doesn't just a read from a teleprompter, like the bubbleboy Bush does (and not very well, I might add).

19. Clinton's impeachment trial in the Senate...
Didn't he do the closing argument without notes? A lot of people are giving him credit for the Senate's aquittal.

Probably what Clinton meant by Edwards being able to talk an owl down from a tree :)
