I don't support the government giving hand-outs to churches in general. I do however have some experience with some of the charity work that I received from 3 churches. I received lunch, an air conditioned place to relax with chairs in the summer, a voice mail service and phone usage for job search, cash-money to get a birth certificate and driver license, free bus passes for a week, and a free bus ticket from Dallas to Houston when I secured employment. The people at the Presbyterian Church in downtown Dallas helped me go from homeless to gainfully employed in one month. When I arrived in Houston I stayed at the Salvation Army. My employer fronted me the money to get an apartment in Pasadena, TX. During my first few months I took advantage of a food and clothes program run by a church within walking distance of my apartment.
I now make a very good living. Without the services provided by these charities I would still be in Dallas doing who knows what and struggling every day. None of the religious institutions that helped me ever preached to me or asked me one thing about my beliefs. I am not a Christian and I do not believe in God. This was not something that ever came up. I don't see any reason why the government shouldn't provide assistance to these types of groups of volunteers and community activists. They are the good guys. They might vote for the wrong party, but my experience with them was nothing but positive and helpful.
