Protesters tear-gassed several times. Confrontations had happened all night long between protesters and riot police.

It seems like that video somewhat exaggerates the scale of the action.

Three arrested at Port of Tacoma during anti-war demonstration

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TACOMA, Wash. -- Police arrested three anti-war demonstrators at the Port of Tacoma during overnight protests against the shipment of military vehicles to Iraq.

About 200 people gathered Friday evening at the port, where several nights of protests have been staged against the shipment of vehicles and equipment for deployment of the Army's 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division from nearby Fort Lewis.

One man was arrested at 9:30 p.m. for obstructing police when he took his backpack into a protest area, said Gretchen Ellis, a Tacoma police spokeswoman. Authorities had prohibited backpacks in the area for security reasons.

Around 11:30 p.m., demonstrators began climbing a fence to enter private property and police used pepper spray to stop them, Ellis said.

The crowd had dwindled to around 35 by 2:30 a.m. Saturday when some protesters threw wooden road barriers onto the street and sat in the roadway, Ellis said. Police launched tear gas at the crowd when people refused orders to leave.

A second person was arrested for obstructing police and another was arrested for third-degree assault of a police officer, Ellis said.

Anti-war demonstrations have been held at the port since last Saturday, with four protesters arrested earlier this week.

The 4th Brigade is scheduled to leave for Iraq in April, a month early. On Monday, a deployment ceremony for the unit is planned at Fort Lewis.

Police Teargas peaceful anti-war protestors
by SouthSideDem
Sat Mar 10, 2007 at 07:13:20 PM PST
This will be a short diary since I can't say very much without using lots of four letter words. Roughly 100 protestors were demonstrating at Tacoma Washington, to protest the war and rally against a shipment of Stryker vehicles to Iraq. They did not attempt to block the shipment, they were orderly, and the area they were at was approved by the authorities.

SouthSideDem's diary ::
Though the demonstrators were singing and sitting for the most part, the police eventually broke up the protest with the use of tear gas and rubber bullets. The protestors claim that they were completely non-violent. The police claim they were getting rowdy. Rather this being a deal of their word against the police's, we thankfully have video evidence.

Two videos from the protest:

11. How to protect yourself against tear gas:
http://www.starhawk.org/activism/trainer-resources/teargas.html

Protection:
Avoid use of oils, lotions and detergents because they can trap the chemicals and thereby prolong exposure. Wash your clothes, your hair and your skin beforehand in a detergent-free soap (such as Dr.Bronner's or most eco-friendly products). We recommend using a water or alcohol-based sunscreen (rather than oil-based). If your choice is between oil-based or nothing, we advocate using the sunscreen. Getting pepper sprayed on top of a sunburn is not fun.

We also recommend minimizing skin exposure by covering up as much as possible. This can also protect you from the sun, as can a big hat. Gas masks provide the best facial protection, if properly fitted and sealed. Alternatively, goggles (with shatter-proof lenses), respirators, even a wet bandana over the nose and mouth will help.

How to deal:
STAY CALM. Panicking increases the irritation. Breathe slowly and remember it is only temporary.
If you see it coming or get a warning, put on protective gear, if able, try to move away or get upwind.
Blow your nose, rinse your mouth, cough and spit. Try not to swallow.
If you wear contacts, try to remove the lenses or get someone to remove them for you, with CLEAN, uncontaminated fingers.

DO NOT RUB IT IN.

13. Right on.
Heard it was a good idea to keep a bandanna soaked in a water/apple cider vinegar mixture in a ziploc baggie as a precaution.

14. Democracy Now covered this in brief on Friday
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 04:52 PM by TheBaldyMan
it was only a necessarily short section right at the end of the program.

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=07/03/09/1444200">listen/watch the segment here.

It features an interview with a Navy vet who was tasered while he was arrested.

on edit: the Tacoma Police Department's spokeman, Detective Brad Graham, claimed they didn't fire until some 'wooden sawhorses' were picked up and thrown at the police. On that clip it is clear that the only sawhorse picked up was used by one guy to push a tear-gas grenade. Looks like a copy of your footage should be kept safe in case the people attacked want evidence against the police.

Here's a link -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdjPh4EeGh8">YouTube link to local cable news report that has a police spokesman giving his reason for the police attack, it rings hollow after seeing your film.

I was there in the front row of the protest. We were completely nonviolent. There were no barriers thrown at the police as more footage shown by Acumensch the person who posted these videos clearly shows.

Watch this clip. You can see me getting hit in the face by a police baton at one minute and fifteen seconds.

Thank you, all of you, for keeping up the protests. Just like the Kent State shootings, they thought that police brutality would shut us up.

All we are saying is give peace a chance.

18. Makes me so proud to be a 'murcan.
:eyes:

Seriously, is there any real reason left for patriotism?

Looking back on my life, it almost seems as if patriotism was brainwashed into me right along with religion. What reason is there for an America cult? We're no better or worse than any other nation. In fact, I'd go so far as to say we're one of the most hypocritical nations in the history of the world.

If I'm wrong, show me. I'd rather not believe our nation is based on a bunch of lies.
