I stumbled on this video showing post WW2 Japan as we left it. Talk about shock and awe.

The order of this movie is Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Tokyo.

1. Guys, it's not as if there is no connection between then and now.
Beyween our sanctimonious willingness to bomb people into the stone age in Japan > Vietnam > Iraq. There is. And it is unlikely to change at all unless we look ourselves square in the mirror and denounce all war.

Self-frigging kick.

2. The history of Allied bombing in WWII has been acknowledged
only in recent years. Certainly it wasn't part of my New York State approved history course c.1971. Even in my daughter's current text book, not only does Dresden get one line, but there is a sidebar discussing the aplomb and stiff upper lip of the British during the blitz! We were fighting truly evil governments. We've known about the Holocaust, but again, it's only recently that the Rape of Nanjing has been reexamined and there are still mainly rumors and isolated facts about the Japanese use of bio warfare in Manchuria. Even so, many historians suggest the bombing of Germany late in the was had more to do with revenge than victory. Many Manhattan Project scientists wanted to destroy their work once Germany was defeated. The motives for dropping nuclear weapons on Japan range from an honest fear of the cost of invasion to racism to eagerness to try out a new toy. The horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki became the focus after the war and the firebombing of Japanese cites faded from popular memory.
