Pennsylvania Republicans highlight Wright in last-minute ad

(CNN) -- The Republican Party of Pennsylvania launched a last-minute television ad that calls attention to Barack Obama's relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

"If you think you could ever vote for Barack Obama, consider this: Obama chose as his spiritual leader this man," the ad's narrator says before clips of Wright's controversial statements are shown.

"Does that sound like someone who should be president?" the ad asks.

The retired pastor's ties to Obama became an issue during the primary season after controversial clips of Wright's sermons were circulated and widely discussed on the Internet and on television.

Obama later condemned Wright's remarks and said he would have left his church if his pastor had not retired and had not acknowledged making comments that "deeply offended people."

Sen. John McCain has repeatedly said he does not believe Obama's relationship to Wright should be an issue -- to the ire of some Republicans who feel it raises questions about the Illinois senator's judgment.

Either way, the possibility of Wright coming back was talked about so much that it probably served to innoculate enough people (who weren't inoculated in the primaries) to prevent this from losing Obama the election.

And it's not even the first "new" Wright ad, those have been running for long enough to have their effect taken into account in the polls.

5. throwing mud at a landslide heading for you isn't the brightest strategy

It does show a.) how desperate the far right republicans are, b.) how pitiful they are for lacking any substance and c.) how ineffective they are for doing it late if they were even going to do it at all. They proved themselves not only to be poor strategists (hence our problems in Iraq), but poorly organized. Not who we want organizing our government.

I have received nightly Robo calls from the same group, that are even more vile than this ad. Today I received a call from a woman stating she was Jan the plumber. What a joke.

The Obama people should have been ready with a Hagee commercial--call it two can play at this game. Show Hagee calling the Catholic Church the "great whore," followed by McCain saying he's pleased to have Hagee's endorsement.

And Wright blamed the 9/11 attacks on America? What about Falwell and Robertson tag-teaming the "blame America" meme the night after the attacks? There's so much stink to this it barely deserves acknowledgment.

This is why McCain didn't bring it up in the debates. It was his Ace in the hole, or November surprise. They probably figured if it was brought up earlier, the impact would be gone by now.

They have nothing of substance, this is their best shot.

19. I suspect that they held off because they didn't want to

leave enough time for retaliation. McCain had refused to allow this up to now, and I can see no reason for that other than a fear of retaliation in kind. Now he's got nothing to lose, and team Obama has very little time to respond.

Sarah Palin's whack-job church would be a great way to go nuclear, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Not so sure Obama would OK that even if there were time.
