He refuses to allow Global Corps to take over his country's resources for their own profits, so as always, when a democratically elected leader of a country with valuable resources wants to use them to benefit his/her own people, Global Corporations call them names, and/or worse, back coups d'etats to topple them. We seem to prefer to deal with brutal dictators who are more than willing to sell out their own countries for their own personal gain rather than deal honestly with democratically elected leaders for some reason.
Things are changing in SA finally, as one country after another asserts their right to elect leaders their own people choose. I think it is a really exciting time there, and having the history those countries have had with colonialism, they are aware that there is strength in numbers and are backing each other up against outside forces, as several SA countries did recently in Bolivia eg, forces who are still attempting to destroy their fledgling democracies. Which is why Bolivia threw out the DEA and the US agents who were backing the radicals who were trying to overthrow Morales.
They call him a dictator because initially he didn't agree to term limits on the presidency. However, considering how popular he is, and how new that democracy is, it is understandable that people might have felt it necessary for him to remain in power long enough to stabalize the country. But, it is not an issue anymore, as the Bolivian Consitution now does limit the time a president may stay in office, which Morales has agreed to.
I hope that Obama will meet with him an other SA leaders and treat them with the respect they and their people deserve. The Bush administration's dealings with those countries was to try to destroy their democraticalle elected leaders and install dictators. They were foiled fortunately as they were too busy stealing the resources of countries in the ME and elsewhere. It's hard to rule the entire world, but they tried.
Now, there is a real chance to start a new era at least regarding SA. If we don't, Russia and China will ~ I'm sure Obama is aware of that as it is already happening, thanks to the thuggery of the Bush administration.
