1. Sea Shepherd was my December donation recipient.
I try to scrape up a few dollars every month for a cause I believe in. Sea Shepherd was my choice for December. I wish them safety and lots of success in their mission!

Their web site is here:

5. No Greenpeace this year...
...I see. NZ Gov is going to monitor whalers with aircraft. The new government in NZ is just as anti-whaling as the outgoing one.

7. Whaling and the Humboldt invasion.
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 03:47 PM by ingin
Question:

Is there a correlation between the reduction of large predatory animals like whales and sharks and the spread of the Humboldt Squid?

How does this effect the commercial fishing industry?

Though I believe that whales should be protected because they are intelligent creatures, this may not be enough to pressure governments to crack down on Japan on this issue.

What is needed it to tie the decline of whales to the rise on Humboldt populations on the west coast of the Americas and their impact on food fish. If you want to get attention of those who could care less about these majestic creatures, tell them that killing them is jeopardizing a major US food source.

9. It could be the reduction of predators, as you suggest
or due to some other man-made impact (e.g., overfishing, water temperature changes) that the Humboldt Squid's normal food supply may be diminished, so they are spreading their foraging territory to adjust to the change, whatever it is. And you're right, only an economic impact on some west coast fishing entity will get attention to make the necessary changes, albeit too late.

The finback, blue, sperm and gray whales observed transiting the west coast to Alaska this past few years have been shown to be severely under-weight. Asian nations are overfishing krill, which is a critical food item for filter feeders, and the changing water temps are causing the bait species, like krill, to not reproduce successfully, or to move to find colder plankton-rich water to graze.

Our environment is f'ed, it just hasn't hurt enough of the robber barons yet to make something happen to correct the wholesale assault on the biosphere.

8. GREAT NEWS
Good news there. Good to see at least one widely know name putting the Whales in the news again. Japanese whalers have been "researching" for too long. It has got to stop. Bless you Sea Shepherd Society and Captain Watson.

13. Any more on Australian Govt. broken promises?
Capt. Watson briefly mentioned the Australian Govt. broken promises. Does anybody have any more about what was promised and what, if anything, the Australians might do to help prevent the slaughter?
