What exactly does this mean and what are the ramifications? Are huge corporations also going to be required to donate time and money for the public good?

1. I wonder what color shirts their uniform will consist of?

2. I am for it. It will give young men and women a chance to grow up
while serving the country. It should help disperse gangs and create self discipline. There should be no exceptions for people like Cheney, who think they have better things to do (6 deferments and no degree.) In fact Cheney should be in the first class. He has a lot of growing to do and a lot to atone for.

4. Agreed. Especially w/ gangs and what has been allowed for kids to do in schools,
the last 30~40 years, this is necessary.

3. Aren't teens in some other developed countries doing universal service on?
Let's see how things play out...

and if this is universal service, corporations and corporate personhood would surely be no different (metaphorically; I have yet to see a regimen of Starbucks logos marching across the field with guns taped on).

5. It's national service not strictly a military draft and I think it's a great idea.
Let's face it, in this economy young people don't have a lot of job prospects and college is become increasingly unaffordable. This is a good way for people just out of high school to get some skills and discipline and help pay for school.

6. depends on what "public service" means
i don't support a draft or baby steps to a draft. the peace movement fought too hard to eliminate the last one.

that being said, i don't think that's what Obama is trying to do.

7. Excellent. Except I don't like the "three months" part.
It should be at least a year. Military service should be one option but not compulsory - there should be plenty of other options to choose from.

I don't expect it to happen, though. Too many selfish weenies in this country will fight against being told they "have" to do anything.

8. We SHOULD be doing it the way Switzerland and Israel do it
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 01:56 PM by Phred42
After 2 years of mandatory service after High school.

"Service" does not necessarily mean Military Service.

Part of the training for this service should include Civics and the Constitution

An all out, no deferment Draft is the only reason we got out of Vietnam. Ever notice that Vietnam ended shortly after the 2-S deferment ended?

10. I would be for this if....
And a big if...

We disband all career military. Get rid of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines.

We already have enough of a National Guard (as long as we pull out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea) to defend this country.

Then, when we know the military isn't going to be the overseas toy of big oil - sure, draft us all! I'd be proud to serve.

12. I can imagine my almost-24-year-old son reporting for duty.
Having been diagnosed as a schizophrenic when he was 19, I'd be surprised if they don't send him home after 10 minutes of listening to him. Depending on what is required of them, it could be a good thing or a bad thing for him.

My other son, who is 25, would have no reservations about this. He's got the personality & skills that will ensure as much success as he desires.

I'm withholding judgment until I hear what this program is all about. I'm not a big fan of compulsory service & it better not consist of military duties. I'm thinking they have civic duties in mind.
