Ernie Pyle covered the invasions of North Africa, Italy, France, as well as a number of island invasions in the Pacific. He was killed on Okinawa.
Bill Mauldin documented the life of the average soldier through his cartoons, and was attached to front-line units in North Africa and Italy.
Walter Cronkite flew with the B-17s on bombing raids deep into Germany, landed with the 101st Airborne in a glider as part of Operation Market Garden, and covered the Battle of the Bulge.

All of these men were part of the "media" as Joe the Hack calls them, and each one could outreport Hack Wurtzelbacher on their very worst days.

FYI, there were women who covered WWII, and I have no doubt each and every one of them were far better reporters than Joe the Hack.
