The Muslim church (which one?) didn't go out of it's way to fund an initiative that attemtpted to take rights away from another group. You'd think that being driven out of Missouri to Utah would've made them sympathetic to people being persecuted.

30. He is related to Nancy Hanks' family
but not a direct direct descendent of Nancy. Her direct descendents would be Abe and his sister Sarah Lincoln (who died very young in childbirth)

I think I've heard that Bill Cosby's wife, Camille, is also releated to Nancy Hank's family.

9. Why can't everyone, on either side, stop calling fellow citizens un-American?
Let's face it, if you compare the Mormon church, with the Muslim church in America, there's not much of a difference. But I highly doubt Mr. Hanks would call them un-American. In fact, he'd probably bendover backwards to say the opposite. He's a giant hypocrite, and a spineless one at that. His path is the path of least resistance, which took the least amount of courage.

24. No organized PATRIARCHAL religion is democratic . . .
So what Tom Hanks said of the Mormon Church which flew it's anti-homosexual

flag very high when it helped fund Prop 8 in California -- is true of them all.

Would Tom have said it of the Muslim faith. I think so. And I think we here

at DU and people everywhere have been saying that of every organized patriarchal

religion. They are about male superiority -- their traditional enemies have been

Jews, women, homosexuals, native peoples, Africans, pagans, etal.

Of course the Papal Bulls called for the enslavement or murder of both the

Native American and the African enslaved in America.

The Old Testament is the enemy of the New Testament ---

but don't lose sight of the fact that the Old Testament was written to cement

patriarchy.

Is the guy with the Toronto Maple Leafs avatar on his DU account attempting to lecture us about being "american"??? How about selecting a baseball team logo and then trying again.

Seriously, how is Hanks voicing his opinion about the activities of the Mormon church any diffrent than the Mormon church voicing it's opinion about our Gay and Lesbian brothers and sisters?

Oh wait. That's right. When Tom Hanks offered his opinion he didn't attempt to pass legislation making Mormon marriages illegal. I get it.

23. Tom Hanks just made a giant leap in the debate for freedom .....
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 07:50 PM by defendandprotect
Yet, it's an old argument so I don't know why some of us haven't picked it up

before -- "un-American" -- used in different ways in our country by the right

in persecuting liberals/progressives via the US House Un-American Activities

Commission. And also very successfully by Hollywood liberals protesting the

Black Listings, etc. Sinatra -- "The House We Live In" -- and many other examples

(that aren't coming to mind right now!!) Unfortunately, the force of the FBI

and "witch hunting" by HUAC won at that time by intimidation/threats of imprisonment,

loss of careers, jobs, families - anti-democratic aggression by right-wing government!

Basically, every organized PATRIARCHAL religion is un-democratic --

Keep in mind, however, that HUAC was established to investigate the RIGHT and

its rise in America around the period of WWII. We should have stuck with that idea and

maybe we wouldn't have had NAZIS in control of CIA and NASA and prominently in FBI--!!!

But I'm sure that all the MATRIARCHAL ones are super democratic ? I would say instead that all

organized religions, cults, sects, whatever are basically antidemocratic because they have their own

power structure and force their views on peoples.Scientology, for example is an organization that

is un-democratic to the bone.Barf!

46. I don't deny the fact the vast majority of religions...
are Patriarchal at all.I'm just saying that about all Religions are anti-Democratic because it goes

against their inner power structures. And most of them weather it's Catholicism or Mormonism are

living in the past anyway.Gee, Galileo was finally "pardoned" in 1992 for his "crime" of pretending

that the Earth was moving around the Sun.It only took them 350 years after Galileo's death.

A good site for infos about the Ordination of Women in the main Religions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordination_of_women

On paper I'm a Catholic but in practice my "religion" is Science and the Pope and all the other

dinosaurs of organized Religions can go Cheney themselves.

25. Okay, so he's upset with the Mormon church, and yet he's producing BIG LOVE, which is about
polygamy? Give me a frikkin' break Tom Hanks. Producing Big Love promotes polygamy, and polygamy has (throughout the ages) been, with rare exception, a system of exploitation of women. No form of exploitation of bigotry is correct. Get your act together. If you're going to defend gay rights, like those of us who do, stop producing bs that promotes a form of bigotry against women.

27. "Big Love" does not "promote" polygamy.
It is about polygamy, but after having watched the series I have to say that it neither promotes it nor condemns it. After all, it is a fact that some people practice polygamy. So what's wrong with making a TV series about polygamous people? Just because you show it doesn't mean that you are promoting it. In fact, it might be the other way around. After having watched that show there is no way that I would ever consider becoming a polygamist.

And polygamy has always been used primarily for the subjugation and sexual exploitation of women.

It may not be your thing, but it is the thing of those who enjoy sexual exploitation of women.

33. I dunno. I mean, if Tom Hanks is "promoting" polygamy, then every producer/filmmaker/artist
that creates something controversial would have to be "promoting" it also. And that is just isn't the case most of the time.

58. I'll go a step farther....
...and say that the series, which I've watched is an extremely raw look at the Mormon faith, but within the LDS church and the Fundamentalist chrches.

It pulls no punches. It shows that people involved in these religions can be bigoted, virtuous, misguided, loving, and ammoral just like anyone in any other religion.

The series drew a lot of viewers in with the erotic aspect of a polygamist lifestyle, but as the series has progressed, it has shown this lifestyle to be one that damages many of the people involved in it (women, young girls, young boys). I agree wit totodeinhere that it in no way promotes the polygamist lifestyle.

39. It's time to quit running everything everyone says through the
filter of whether or not it gives ammo to the RW. People need to quit cowering and stand up and say what they mean and mean what they say.

To pour in tons of money into another state for the sole purpose of taking away another's constitutional rights because they don't adhere to your religious viewpoint is un-American in more way than one. Hanks is right, he said it and the RW will just have to live with it.

The whimpy "oh my, what will the RW say?" way that Democrats (particularly DLC Democrats) have approached the past decade is what has gotten us into the mess we're in. If the RW doesn't like it, say it louder and say it prouder, because it has got to be right. People from Hollywood aren't any less worthy to make comments about issues impacting this country than some ignorant slob on Faux News or than Rush Limbaugh.

The RW making a major stink over what CERTAIN people from Hollywood say is only meant to keep CERTAIN ideas from having a large platform. Period. They have absolutely no problem worshiping people from Hollywood when it serves their purposes. Does Ronald Reagan or Fred Thompson ring a bell?

It's time for progressives to stop internalizing RW talking points and stop being the fools the RW thinks we are.

44. And his wimp-out in "Charlie Wilson's War"
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 12:14 AM by onager
Google for details, as usual.

Aaron Sorkin's original script for "CWW" contained some material pointing 9/11 straight back to our support of the Afghan "freedom fighters" during the 1980's. People like Osama bin Laden and Hekmatyr Gulbuddin.

e.g., Sorkin wrote one great line for the CIA agent Gust, played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman: "There will come a time when we WISH the godless Communists were running Afghanistan." (From memory.)

George Crile's book "CWW" made this very clear and went into great detail about it. In many places, Wilson and his helpers came across as ignorant fools fixated on nothing but the idea of "killing Russians." Wilson liked Pakistan because he hated India. For one reason, he "didn't like the way Indians held their heads." !!!

After reading the script, Hanks said "I just can't deal with this 9/11 stuff" and forced several re-writes.

Some other re-writes happened because the crazy right-wing heiress in the movie, Joanne Herring, threatened the studio with massive lawsuits.
