THE last of 48 sperm whales stranded in Tasmania has died, drawing criticism that authorities refused help to save them.

The whales, mostly mothers and calves, beached themselves on Perkins Island near Smithton, on Tasmania's remote north-west tip, on Thursday night. By Saturday morning only two had remained alive, but both died during the day.

The last of the stranded whales was still alive on Sunday but hopes had been fading for the creature's survival, said Chris Arthur from Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service. Palliative care had been administered to the whale, he said.

It had been trapped behind several dead ones, and moving the 20-tonne creatures was difficult because the area was remote, he said.

(Incredibly tragic, I wonder the cause. I hope it will be investigated).

Earth Democracy - Save The Earth : A Poem
By Kayzzaman / December 06, 2008
It is our air, it is our water It is our homeland, we are assembled together Together we live, together we die Together we smile, together we cry for the same moon Together we breathe the same peace, we all breathe the same air Together we eat the same humble pie, together we all sigh Together we are never alone, together we tell the same weal and same woes Never we fall before the bonfire, never before the clouds, never Never we are alone, we are all together, together we are our days and nights Together we rule, together we are ruled Together we break the bondage, together we break the freedom Together we win the world, together we are conquered Together we rise, together we fall into the same sky of the setting sun Together we come, together we go all places, hands in hands Together we are all and together we have all, together we stand to have all of all Everything is ours, ours is everything Everything we get and everything we lose, ours is everything we own Everything on this earth for everyone on this earth Together we are everyone, for all and everything we all are everyone Everyone is of this earth and from this earth, we are the earth Everyone is for this earth, everyone we serve this little earth, everyone of us The earth is one, the earth is all, we are the earth, every little one of us The earth is our democracy, we are all for democracy Democracy is our life, democracy is our death and we save democracy We save the earth, we save democracy and we are for the earth For democracy we live, for democracy we will die For democracy we will save the land, the air, the water We will save the democracy, we will save the earth.

Klaatu says “If the earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives”.

2. thanks for adding that
some solace to know some humans feel the whales are part of us and we are part of them too. So this happened to us too.

Whale dissected on beach at base http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2007/sep/23/whale-dissected-on-beach-at-base/
Over the sound of driving rain hitting rotting flesh, the long, metallic drag of scientists sharpening blades filled the putrid-smelling air. After the knife with the 4-foot-long handle was ready, after the wide blade used for cutting blubber was prepared, biologists went to work dissecting a 70-foot dead blue whale on Family Beach at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu, on Saturday morning. It was the day scientists had been waiting for since the whale was first spotted floating offshore near oil Platform Gail on Thursday. Its skin was still blue, as it likely died Tuesday or Wednesday, presenting a rare opportunity to study the world's largest animal, an endangered species. After the current failed to take the male whale to shore, scientists scrambled to tow it in so the necropsy could begin. With sharks trolling the waters and sea gulls pecking from above, a nylon strap was wrapped around its massive tail Friday afternoon.

We collect as much data as possible and we let the clues of the tissue tell us what is going on," said Michelle Berman, assistant curator at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. About 45 minutes into the necropsy, the smoking gun was found. Two of the 9-foot ribs were broken, with foot-long chunks of bone floating in the animal. Something hit it hard. Though the cause was most likely a ship collision, further tests will be done to see whether something like a bacteria caused the animal to be disoriented, Berman said.

This is the third blue whale in Southern California that was likely killed after a boat collision this month. Another whale recently died near Ensenada, Mexico, Berman said. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration is launching an investigation into the whale deaths. "We really want to try to get as much information as we can so we can figure out why they are dying," she said.

3. Somebody should send a copy of this article to the judge
who OKayed the use of the huge sonar devices that the navy uses in the Pacific. Environmentalists were opposed to the use of the devices of course. They argued that the sound ruins the ecolocation abilities of the whales and causes these crazy beachings and oft-times deaths.

This is very likely the result of a pod or more than one pod being deluged with some of these tremendous sounds coming from Navy exercises in the Pacific.
