1. (Accidental Post) Well, I might as well write something now.

I think conventional wisdom is that The Steelers will win today, and probably even win somehwat comfortably. I can't argue that they'll probably win, but I'm not so sure about the comfortably.

When I have no personal stake in the game, I almost always go for the underdog. In this case, my heart is with Arizona. BUT my head is with Pittsburgh because my GF's brother has some $ down for her as a gift. In other words, she didn't give him any money but since he's in Las Vegas he decided to go ahead and give her a little something if the Steelers win (by 8 or more).

I think it'll be close in the first half, maybe even the first 2.5-3 quarters or so, but eventually that ferocious Steelers D will get to Warner, creating sacks and turnovers allowing Pit to pull away late.

My prediction:

Pittsburgh 27
Arizona 20

3. Mine: Pittsburgh, but I won't try and guess points. Haven't been able to follow at all this season.

2. Even if I didn't live in Arizona right now I'd pull for the Cardinals.

I usually go for the underdog. That being said, it'll be a tough road for the Cards to win this one, but they probably should have lost every playoff game they have been in this year, but they have pulled them all out.

My prediction:

This will be an exciting game. The offenses will play a little better than the defenses. Roethlisberger will be cool as a cucumber and play well, but Kurt Warner is going to be on fire. The big playmaker of the day? Watch Larry Fitzgerald.

4. Not many football fans here, eh?

I guess that's not super suprising, but still.

At any rate, one of the reasons football is the best sport (by far) is because of the salary cap. It's like regulated capitalism. Generally speaking, you don't end up with a Yankees evil empire that BUYS championships.

No, with football it means that EVERY team has a shot every year, not just the teams with the top payroll (which is how life should be). Sure, there are the Patriots and the Devil Rays, but those are just exceptions that prove the rule.

5. I love sports in general

I was a serious two sport athlete, competed internationally. It runs in my family, my uncle was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers, numerous relatives have had excellent HS and college careers, one of my brothers has been a professional and now a college basketball coach. I couldn't live without watching something like the Super Bowl, lol.

Interesting football note. My uncle used to be the Senate page for Montana Senator Mike Mansfield and my grandfather, his father, had been president of the National Congress of American Indians. So through those contacts and their friendships with JFK and RFK, my uncle used to sometimes go out and play touch football with the Kennedys. That would have been unbelievable, lol.

I should have noted the uncle who was the senate page is different than the first one I mentioned who was drafted in the NBA. Brothers, but different people. :)

I was a starting noseguard on my 7th grade team, lol. All 90 pounds of me. I never played in HS, I never grew, for one thing, and I also usually rode bulls throughout football season anyway.

11. Super Bowl???

ER: What's all this fuss about, what is it called, the 'Super Bowl'?
FDR: It's a big football game, old girl.
ER: Is it a championship or something?
FDR: Indeed it is! I must place a bet on it.
ER: Darling, it's 1933 and you're going to bet on a game played in 2009?
FDR: Why not?
ER: I doubt they'll still be playing college football in 2009.
FDR: I think it's professional football.
ER: Surely the college teams have a big championship game...

8. Best team ever? Are they serious?

They may not even be in the top 10 teams of the decade. They are nothing special. The league is soft right now. There are 6 or 8 teams this year that could have been in this Super Bowl just as easily as these two teams. Neither of these teams stands far above the other teams in the league THIS SEASON, let alone of all time.

It is an insult to the great teams of the past to even ask that question.

9. I think they're referring to the franchise. You know, franchise with the most championships, etc.

Best team of all time is (of course) the 85 Bears. Sad that injuries made them a one year wonder, but still.

13. Well, there's an argument, I suppose

You have to look at the Patriots of the 2000s, the Cowboys and 49ers of of the late 20th century and the Packers of earlier days.

I wouldn't be making any of these arguments based on this year's team. They are decent, but not a team for the ages.

and of the two Bible-thumping quarterbacks, you gotta like Warner.

I think the completely meaningless Redskins-Cardinals game I attended in Jan '02 that was delayed by the events of Sept. 11th might have been Tillman's last game.
