1. Is that AC/DC I hear?
Who knew dolphins were metalheads? Then again, they ARE known for being highly intelligent...

2. HA. That's obviously a fake.
There's no such thing as sea monsters and everyone knows that there are no craft capable of venturing over the waters of the world. They would sink like a stone. Nice try, but I know from experience having attempted to do so with my mule cart.

5. When I lived in Santa Barbara
They used to ride the waves rolling in along side the surfers.

I miss Santa Barbara!

8. You can hear the dolphins singing "Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish!" But
seriously, they're probably escorting your noisy motor and Rock blaring little dinghy to make sure you leave their waters. "Sailing" indeed!

9. Well for your info I was heading directly into the prevailing winds and my motor was not at full
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 08:05 PM by sce56
throttle since the winds were finally starting to pickup in fact after sunset I was able to sail with a good wind making quite a few tacks since it was going directly in the wind direction! They will do that and my so called Dinghy is a USCG Documented vessel, greater than 5 Net Tons as evidenced by the lack of stickers on the bow!

Dolphins surf for fun

Q: Why do Dolphins like to swim in the front of the ship bow? --M. Kelvin Harris, Cambridge, England

A: They like to play! Sailors onboard a speedy ship watch them cavort for an hour or more without ever losing sight of a school.

Dolphins cavorting in the NOAA Ship Rude's bow wake

Dolphins follow an undulating path as they swim: continually rising to breathe, dipping down, and rising again. Usually only the head surfaces. They leap out of the water and curve over in an arc to go fast. The less time in the water, the faster they can speed.

Among the fastest whales, common dolphins cruise at about 5 knots (6 mph) and can swim at 20 knots (24 mph) for long distances. What they really like, though, is surf the bow wave much as we humans bodysurf. They hold their bodies at an angle and use them as a surfboard, hardly swimming at all, yet going faster than they can under their own steam.

12. Perhaps you could have known from my Hitchhikers reference, but I was just
trying to be ironic. Sorry. I'm still relatively "new" to DU and didn't remember one of the administrators' cardinal rules:
Never diss a blue water sailer.

14. Thats ok we all just like to blow off a little steam now and then anyway
You never know how is for real or just trying to blow smoke up your ass! As for my sailing experience it is not what I would like it to be but I just did a three day trip solo and yes you need a motor for getting in and out of the port as well as for windless days!
