2. Considering that Petraeus was practically the de facto VP nominee for McCain, that's not a surprise.
Time to strip some titles, Mr. President. That's the only thing the military brass will take seriously.

14. Agreed.
Cenk's point about how conservatives will pounce on any negative news from Iraq is true (and incredibly obnoxious). But it's great that Obama is standing strong on withdrawl.

6. I saw this earlier this morning and it made me think
about the scuttlebutt that was going around during the incident of nuclear weapon's being transfered to Louisiana for attack on Iran and the alleged resistance within the military to stop them. So hopefully, if there is a conservative insurgency within our military there will also be a counter insurgency who is there to put country first.

Time will tell.

9. Obama Must Not Back Down
Obama needs to make these Generals understand who is in charge .... or it's time to reinstate many great and competent generals that Bush canned because they would not agree with him. All strong Bush sympathizers must be removed ... way too much to be accomplished ... no time to have to continually watch ones back!

1) The chief Jutice screwed up the presidential oath TWICE.
2) The Joint Chiefs refused to stand with President Obama during the inaugeration parade.

Generals take so much from democracy and return absolutely nothing. The "freedom isn't free" matra is horse shit, and democracy evaporates a little bit more each time the war heads press their will. The military is NOT a democratic institution after all, and it appears possible that some loose interpretation of the oath screw up could be in play. If Mr. Obama was not the legitimate president, then it would set the stage for a coup for the protocol freaks.

May this decade forever end the insidious religion of warrior worship.

Generals Seek To Reverse Obama's Iraq Withdrawal Decision
February 2, 2009

CENTCOM commander Gen. David Petraeus, supported by Defence Secretary Robert Gates, tried to convince President Barack Obama that he had to back down from his campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months at an Oval Office meeting Jan. 21.

But Obama informed Gates, Petraeus and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen that he wasn't convinced and that he wanted Gates and the military leaders to come back quickly with a detailed 16-month plan, according to two sources who have talked with participants in the meeting.

Obama's decision to override Petraeus's recommendation has not ended the conflict between the president and senior military officers over troop withdrawal, however. There are indications that Petraeus and his allies in the military and the Pentagon, including Gen. Ray Odierno, now the top commander in Iraq, have already begun to try to pressure Obama to change his withdrawal policy.

A network of senior military officers is also reported to be preparing to support Petraeus and Odierno by mobilising public opinion against Obama's decision.

Edit: And let us recall the sordid relationships of military analysts like Jack Keane:

Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand

April 20, 2008

To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio as “military analysts” whose long service has equipped them to give authoritative and unfettered judgments about the most pressing issues of the post-Sept. 11 world.

Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found.

The effort, which began with the buildup to the Iraq war and continues to this day, has sought to exploit ideological and military allegiances, and also a powerful financial dynamic: Most of the analysts have ties to military contractors vested in the very war policies they are asked to assess on air.

Those business relationships are hardly ever disclosed to the viewers, and sometimes not even to the networks themselves. But collectively, the men on the plane and several dozen other military analysts represent more than 150 military contractors either as lobbyists, senior executives, board members or consultants. The companies include defense heavyweights, but also scores of smaller companies, all part of a vast assemblage of contractors scrambling for hundreds of billions in military business generated by the administration’s war on terror. It is a furious competition, one in which inside information and easy access to senior officials are highly prized.

40. Junior signed the Status of Forces agreement to be out by end of 2011.
It remains unclear to me why the warmongers pretend otherwise, although clearly their and the prior administration's word isn't worth spit. Still, they seem surprised that Obama is a man of his word.

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/iraq/status-of-forces-agreement/index.html

* snip *

On Nov. 27, 2008, the Iraqi Parliament ratified a Status of Forces agreement with the United States that sets a course for an end to the United States’ role in the war and marks the beginning of a new relationship between the countries. The pact calls for American troops to pull out of most Iraqi cities by the summer of 2009 and sets the end of 2011 as the date by which the last American troops must leave the country.

The agreement, the product of a year of hard bargaining with the government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki, replaced a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted in October 2003 authorizing the presence of the military forces of the United States and its coalition partners. hat resolution was to last only until an Iraqi government was formed. Instead, it was regularly renewed, even after an Iraqi Constitution was written and a permanent government, led by Mr. Maliki, took office in the spring of 2006.
