1. Listen to Rachel Maddow, Obama
Rachel is telling you that despite your honest bipartisanship efforts, "Republicans are not into you." So quite your addiction to bipartisanship and play hardball with the Repukes. The Repukes don't care if the country goes into a Depression or complete economic collapse. They will blame you for it. They want to gut the spending proposals out of this bill because if those spending plans succeed and get the recovery underway, the Repukes see their political extinction in 2010.

23. His speeches were good today, but...
he needs to stay consistent and stop trying to kiss Repuke a@@. I don't have a problem with him talking to the Repukes, but based on his interpretation of bipartisanship/post-partisanship, Obama looked naive about the Republicans. The Repukes need Obama's economic recovery plan to fail because it will spell the extinction or at least a generational setback for the Republican Party.

And based on his speeches, it looks like Obama has been listening to Paul Krugman, who has publiclly called for less tax cuts and more spending. Krugman thinks that this current bill doesn't spend enough. We'll see.

25. there is NO way Obama thinks bipartisanship will work with THIS group of republicans
he is playing them for the fools they are. First he says "let's talk, and do something right for the American people", he spends a few hours meeting with them, socializing etc. knowing all along there is no way these assholes will do anything but kick him in the shins.

But when they do kick him in the shins, it is so much more transparent than it used to be. The GOP used to be able to say "dems do it to, it's the Washington game" but THAT line doesn't work when you've got a guy inviting you to a super bowl party. Remember Clinton and Bush, they both played the partisan game to the nines. "Dems are not patriotic" "right wing conspiracy" lots of good it did either side.

Obama knows exactly what he's doing. He's spent the last 30 years thinking about this. He is going to pull the rug right out from under the assholes in the GOP making them the minority party exactly the way FDR did it.

26. Disagree
Obama misled himself about the Republicans. He thought he could charm them with his post-partisan ideology. But the Repukes will never honestly bargain with Democrats. It's their way is the only way. The Republicans are winning the spin war right now and I hope that wakes up Obama to the fact that Republicans are like the scorpion in the urban fable "The Scorpion and the Frog" in which the scorpion stings the frog halfway across the river and kills both of them. The Republicans would rather destroy this country than allow Obama to save it with an FDR-like economic stimulus.

Krugman has been on Obama's case because Obama has failed to realize that it was the Republicans, not the Democrats, who have created the hostile political environment in Washington.

Obama's speeches today seems to indicate that he has finally woken up to what the Republicans really are -- bullies for the wealthy elite.

The scorpion dies in that story along with the frog, so what you are saying is that Obama hopes he fails?

39. I do not for a moment think that Obama felt he could charm . . .
. . . the 'Lican troglodytes who infest Congress and whose most perfect expression of principle and intellect is -- Rush Limbaugh.

He knows they are antediluvians who are only capable of thinking with their reptile brains. He has to be seen attempting to charm them so that when they spit in his face he can wipe it off and turn to the American people with his patented "what did I tell you" look on his face.

They are drowning rats; they are an anthill with boiling water poured down it; they are cockroaches caught by the kitchen lights at midnight.

They are stupid, they are fatuous, they are dishonest, and they are last year's news.

Obama will go down in history as the man who broke the Republican Party over his knee and tossed the pieces in the dustbin of history.

29. He might have been listening
Be he hasn't learned a thing. This was on the plan all along.

He is doing the teaching.

There is an asyounding amount of people here that think that the Obama camp would not see this happening. That they are more politically savyy, than the combined political brain power of the Obama camp.

Rahm is his cheif of staff for christ sakes. He could probably tell him the vote results and the GOP plays weeks in advance.

But he gave the GOP a shot to get on board - and now he can start berating them in public for not doing so.

31. You are so right!
I think he is able to play it both ways here: do the charm offensive and it may nab a few here or there, but if they are pre-agreed to reject this wholesale, he makes them look like assholes. They can holler "tax and spend liberal" but the bottom line is who has the strongest persuader on their team? I tuned into to CBS the other night and they had McCain on there berating the plan. I thought, that's all you've got? McCain? Didn't we just stomp him in the election? The Obama team has political savvy, that is without question. They are just changing the rules a bit!

34. You Obama fanatics can delude yourselves all you want
but Obama became blinded by his post-partisanship ideology and the Republicans have burned him now. Thankfully Obama is not like Bush and will change course quickly.

Rahm is a corporate whore and a lot of Obama's economic teams are whores for corporate interests. That's why a lot of us progressives, like David Sirota, don't trust Obama to do what is right unless we put pressure on him. Lincoln's Team of Rivals was overrated. Those rivals cost Lincoln time in dealing with his crisis quickly and effectively. Obama's post-partisanship ideology and his team of rivals is costing his Admin and our country prescious time to resolve our current economic crisis. Obama's last 2 speeches seem to indicate that Obama has learned from his mistake. Hopefully, it will lead him to chuck the post-partisanship ideology.

35. You don't think its even more deluded ..
..to think that his reponse now is due to some wisdom that a smart guy like him, who has worked in the system, was not privy to - but was imparted on him by outsiders with a 10th of the information and experience he had?

He campaigned on it. For that reason and more (He is the president for the GOP constituents as well. Even if Bush did not act that way when the table was turned, Obama is respectful of that part of his duty, I think), he had to give the GOP a chance to get on board. And now he can hammer them and push his policies in with less regard for the public image of partisanship. It was important that it was the GOP that cut the cord.

36. How can you possibly keep underestimating this man?
I can't wait until you people realize that this guy is the best politician this party has ever seen.

This is how he beat Hillary, and how he ran circles around McCain. Play nice, draw them in, let them attack, attack, attack, and when the moment is right, counterpunch and aim for the goodies.

The bipartisan efforts were all window dressing, so the average American watchng the TV screen - not the partisans like you or I or the Freepers, but the casual followers of American politics, you know, the ones who win and lose elections - would say, "well, he tried to get the Republicans on board, but they are just acting like a bunch of assholes." Meanwhile he goes out of his way to pick a fight with Rush Limbaugh, basically telling the Republicans, "you have to be with me or them" knowing that they would be stupid enough to rally around a guy who is 15 years past his prime as an influential voice in politics, and not the guy who just won the Presidency by a 2-1 margin in the electoral college.

He played them, like a fiddle. Sorry you can't see that. But I guess if we don't have some partisans yelling about how Obama isn't left enough for them, the regular folks might catch onto his act.

38. You keep saying the same thing......
But unfortunately, the folks who you are calling Obama fanatics seem to articulate the "Obama ain't stupid even if stupid people think so" theory better than your "he's naive" bit you keep repeating.

Screaming at the top of your lungs that President Obama isn't perfect, doesn't quite hits the spot...because, well, no one said he was. What he is, is a whole lot better of a politician than you give are willing to give him credit for. That's the difference in this little debate.
President Obama ain't no fucking Obambi....even if you won't see that till it's done.

43. Obama's poll numbers have dropped 8 points during this stimulus battle
and that was before he made his "partisan" speeches, which were very good. Obama was getting pummeled by the Repukes and his lack of fighting back has hurt him. Not fatally for now, but a significant hit was laid on Obama by the Republicans who started to turn the stimulus PR battle to their side.

40. There were some bad apples in Lincoln's cabinet . . .
but on the whole, they strengthened him immeasurably. Without Seward, Stanton, Chase, and Welles (at least!) the Civil War would have ended with two mangled countries sniping at each other for all eternity.

Obama's been in office, what two weeks? And you're talking about lost time? I think he's moving pretty frakkin' fast, myself. And yes, one can debate the backgrounds and allegiances of his cabinet and inner circle (Sirota's just one of many critics) -- although I'm not enough of an insider to confidently assign weighting to the biographical and career information now circulating -- but I say, let's let 'em do something before we start tossing the term "whore" around indiscriminately.

42. Lincoln's team of rivals was overrated
And they did not work out as well as Lincoln had hope. Many historians think that Lincoln's team of rivals prolonged the Civil War by helping Lincoln either make bad decisions or make him hesitate on making major decisions.

And by creating a team of rivals, Lincoln pissed off his allies, who then became his enemies.

44. Many historians disagree with you entirely.
Of course they didn't turn out as well as he'd hoped. Lincoln's huge failure -- not primarily a result of bad decisionmaking -- was to take so long to find military leaders and advisors who were equal to the task.

With regard to pissing off his allies, his victory was so thin in 1860 -- he got about a quarter of the vote, remember -- he had to co-opt pretty much the full range of northern opinion to sustain opposition to succession. Yes, he had to stiff some of his more whiggish friends, but the net result was a north able to fight the war to an ultimately "successful" conclusion.

41. Either way it doesn't matter really.
Planned or not, repukes are going to be seen as the obstructionists they are. The public is NOT going to be happy about that imo. President Obama has never shied away from calling it like it is. Look at what he said right in front of the former administration at his inauguration. Same with this speech.

WE have the 'bully pulpit' now. And the President is seen as shunned by a party that allowed corporate America to rob us blind. Not a good time to be a republican imo. Well deserved I might add. They keep this up and the President's numbers will go UP when calling for the 'nuclear option' in the Senate, though the idea's original authors would be screaming from the rafters.

I Hope President Obama will SOON accept that true reality, and stop "falling" in their obvious TRAPS.
