1. I really love what Cenk has to say usually...
...but this time I must decisively disagree with his assessment. This was racist and there is no way of getting around that.

10. I agree.
Granted, there's not a single person (much less talk show host) that I agree with 100% of the time.

20. He was wrong on that one point but he wrote a whole article on this and you should read it!
His heart is in the right place and he says some things that make a lot of sense!

2. On the topic of racism, a little exercise.

Imagine the world, 1000 years from now, every person living is black.

Think about it awhile.

If you had different feelings about these two hypothetical futures, you have some view or innate bias based on race. Should it matter if one or the other was true? Shouldn't both hypothetical futures be equally good, or equally bad?

(no offense to other races, could do the same thing for asian, hispanic, or any other 'group' people like to group themselves and others by)

I like a racial spectrum in a society's population.

15. I would be greatly relieved
To know that there will be people around 1,000 years from now, regardless of their race(s). And hopefully these are people living in a decent society, not cave people living to 30 then dying from accumulated radiation.

3. On the topic of violence
or if you really think the article is some kind of humor.

Why did the artist take the time to add the sign on the telephone poll.

War Dog.

It looks like someone was trying to sign it. Although it could be ar dog, or the more common beware of dog.

Either way, the use of violence fear and things like this have no place, nor effect, once they are seen for what they are. Just plain bad. it is easy to see which side this comes from.

It should be noted, this is one person's drawing, wrongly allowed to circulate this imagery by maybe a couple news paper editors.

Imagine that... three people trying to define what an entire nation should think, and trying to interject fear and violence into an entire country, and possibly even saying what they believe, or who they are.

They are only a few people, realize that, and the perspective of what media is, and should actually be, will change a bit

9. I think you got my point
those 3 people have an opinion, just like any three of us could be said to have an opinion. But what media is is an unequal expression of that opinion. That ability to reach millions is not based on if it is correct, if it is helpful, or even if most would find it good, it is about how much money a person has. (however repeated 'un-liked' info will degrade income of news source, so other income like diversified corporate profits from other sectors are needed to sustain the ability to print one sided information without 'lack of the value' of the information leading to a failure of the vehicle of transmission. Corporate media)

Solely based on money they have the ability to speak to millions. Well based on money and the fact we pay for trash like that.

Communication systems where the best information rises to the top based on many people evaluating the content allows for viewing information that has enough people that agrees with it to repost or move its viewership up. This is one of the real benefits of a free internet.

Some might say "but look everyone is repeating it" but if that same cartoon was on one web page, then it would not have spread to every forum, it is the huge base of viewers the image starts with that forces people to respond to it, if it was just one post on one web page, people would just say the person is an idiot and ignore it.

Now if it did spread, then there would be a story in the exact same way as everyone now talking about it, why? because people would be commenting on how many people agreed with it enough to repost it, or how people gave some credibility to source by responding. So the fact that response exist now proves that 3 people at that paper have the same value as 10,000 of people elsewhere, people literally think if it is in a news paper, many people must agree with it. Even though it only takes a few people to get it in news paper.

5. Naive is an understatement...Even if some of what Cink is saying
is true the editors could not have passed on this without knowing the racist ambiguity and clear implications; But they passed on it with a kind of glee as is evidenced in their response to the criticism... enjoying the double entenrdra witch is racist to the core. A kind of chortling in your fist that you pulled off something and have a good cover for the cheap racist shot. I am surprised at Cink. A respectable mind would not have allowed this at all. This is not even vaguely representative of discourse on race. It is a discourse from the gutter

13. The cartoonist MIGHT not be racist, but..
the NY Post showed an extreme lack of judgment. As a black man, I hear what J.R. and the others are saying about not knowing what the cartoonist was thinking, HOWEVER, the NY Post should have known that at the VERY least, this cartoon would be inappropriate. (Unless, of course, we are to consider them a bunch of fucking morons when it comes to history). That being said, why would J.R., Cenk and the "Chief Justice" argue that it is okay to print such a thing? They also ignored the source of the cartoon, the New York Post, which they should know is a conservative rag that would most likely have no problem getting away with being racist in the guise of being in line with current events.

I usually agree, and am extremely impressed, by both J.R. and Cenk, but I think these two showed mental laziness in this analysis and therefore cannot recommend this video (something I ALWAYS do!).

Now, I know I'm gay, but is Anna getting hotter by the day? (Whether I agree with her or not)

14. I usually agree with Cenk most of the time... and I give him some leeway on this one but...
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 11:12 AM by wowimthere
Here is the problem though... a cartoon can be an act of racism. We don't have to say that the person who drew the cartoon is racist but we know that newspapers don't print cartoons of this sort by accident. The New York Post? Come on. We have to understand who posted this. Racism can be cloaked in many different disguises. To say that it's not a racist cartoon because we can't get in the mind of the cartoonist does not mean the act of drawing isn't blatant racism. It can be. So while I'm not gonna call the cartoonist a racist because he could just be having fun at his craft or maybe he's looking at life from someone else's point of view... I'd like to call this what it is. The cartoon itself smacks of racism. To not call it what it is in some ways ignores what Eric Holder spoke about. Let's call the cartoon racist even if it's unintended. Part of the problem is we want to excuse our way out of calling something what it is. Stop this because it's the same as ignoring racism ever happens.

16. I have to disagree. That was racist through and through.
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 12:16 PM by Seldona
I remember the old guy who showed up at the McCain rally with a monkey toy with an Obama sticker. These people are OUT THERE. Even if he didn't mean it, and I don't believe that for a second, than he had to know people were going to construe it that way. If not, I would be surprised if he could hold a pencil, much less use one.

I mean, it's the New York Post for god's sake! Love ya TYT, but we can't agree all the time.

*Edited to add K&R. Even though I disagree, the conversation must be had imo.

18. Query: Would this cartoon have been published if Hilary Clinton had won?
Or some old white guy? I doubt it. But I think I know what Cenk is trying to say and, whether I agree with him or not (It feels racist to me), I still want him on MSNBC at 10.

19. What else could the monkey symbolize?
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 01:02 PM by windoe
Writers of the stimulus package are primitive?
Police shooting a monkey is funny?

Please help me out here, I cannot think of another line of humor on this cartoon.

My reaction is:
The NYP is savvy enough to know that SOME people, perhaps many, would interpret this as racist, and they printed it anyway. I tend to believe that most people can see the clear racism in the use of this symbol, since it has been used historically in this country in many cartoons before.

conceivably--in some small measure--be seen as not racist, but only in bad taste. And folks, this is how racism works. Racism in America is not a klansman in full hate-drag sitting next to you on the bus or a skinhead covered in swastikas appearing on the nightly news. Racism today is subtle, disingenuous and cowardly. No one wants to be identified as a racist, because we all know racism is wrong. No, today's racist always wants an out, a coincidental convenience factor. The NYP knew full well that this cartoon would be interpreted by many as racist, and it did not care. It wanted to be racist, but it wanted is cowardly coincidental factor.

Racism is as ugly as it sounds!:kick:
