1. Wow
A Baptist minister from Louisiana who is far more reasoned on this issue than even Obama. That is a surprise. Obama should have abolished this program soon after he was sworn in. But he is like Bush on this issue. It is past time to keep government out of religion and vice verse. Why should any church get federal funding anyway? If you are going to do that then they should pay taxes IMO.

4. I, personally, need to be exposed to MORE Southern religious leaders that have a brain.
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 03:32 PM by Hulk
I was very impressed by listening to this man and Rachel. I have become so disenchanted with the leaders, from all fields, coming from the South. They are either repug/fascists, evangelical-psychotic, beer drinking NASCAR mentality jerk offs, or other degenerates.

I really want to have more faith in The South, but it's hard sometimes. I need to hear more from their "intelligent base", and less from the KKK members and hate-mongers.

11. I hate being an irrational bigot
I agree with you. I love stumbling across people (like this guy) who break down my own hangups and biases. I share your views on the south. I know that the generalizations I carry in my mind are wrong. But sadly, our brains are built to make order out of complexity. Believing that the South is full of knuckle-dragging baptist-taliban troglodytes is quite simple, right? That's easier than trying to understand the South as a collection of individuals with complex histories and experiences.

That said, I'll continue to cling to the notion that NASCAR fans are intellectually inferior to domesticated poultry.

10. And, Rev. Gaddy used to be at the helm of A.U.S.C.S. ...
www.au.org - he used to run Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, and is friends with the current head, Rev. Barry Lynn, J.D.

12. Is that actually true?
I happily voted this clown out of office, but I had never heard that claim before. Can you provide a source for that?

3. Thanks so much for posting this ...
I truly resent so-called "Christians" for purporting to be experts on other religions when they so clearly do not even understand what "Christian" beliefs and practices are. Rachel and this evangelical minister both have and make common sense.

I hope that Obama will pay attention. I too am very disappointed that he has continued the Bush faith-based policies. But it's still early days, so one can hope that he will at least correct the two major areas discussed here.

We all deserve better. Our Constitution deserves better.

Thanks to these courageous people and others like them. :applause:

8. Santorum also likes to contrast Christianity with Islam, saying...
that Christianity just determines what you do Sunday, while
Islam rules people's lives entirely. Pretty rich coming from
a guy who was always keen to try and shove his religion down
people's necks, particularly women's and gays.

13. It amazes me that a US senator could be so ignorant of history
Even more because he is a Catholic from Pennsylvania. Does he no nothing about the anti-Catholic bigotry of the 1840's that lead to the burning of the Catholic church on 4th street in Philadelphia. You could just substitute the pope and Rome with so much of what he says and you would get what the bigots said way back then. One of the complaints was that the Catholic Church had services only in Latin (or romanish for Rick).

This man should be loudly condemned for his bigotry against devout Muslim Americans.

I say this as a dear muslim friend, who was responsible for building a Mosque in South Jersey suffers from a brain tumor. A wonderful generous man, who when faced with opposition to the construction of the mosque, became a one man interfaith ambassador. He began this work at an interfaith Thanksgiving service in a church only a few steps away from where that Catholic church was torched so long ago. I will never forget his translation of the prayer muslims say 5 times a day, when the two rabbis behind him nodded as if to say "We agree with this prayer".

I have met so many wonderful patriotic muslim people. Their religion is not for me, but I have personally seen the strength and peace that their faith brings them.
