4. I don't know, I tend to disagree that this is a bad move politically

They will permanently burn some bridges in their home states over this, true. But they think this will appeal to the base (which it will), the figure they will win their home state in the primaries based on name recognition (not a bad assumption), and even if they don't and somehow make it to the general election, they are all from very safe, very red states. They really don't have much to worry about from their Republican constituents, even those hurt by their decisions. But they are choosing obstruction and politics over what's best for people, and should any of these creeps emerge victorious in the primaries, we can't let liberals and moderates forget what kind of douchebag he/she is.
