4. Bill Maher was talking about a movie like this on Larry King

many moons ago, and then sort of fell silent on the issue and half-apologized, probably for fear of being sued. I wonder if this was the movie he was talking about?

5. As a gay man I am normally opposed to "outing"

I think a person's personal decisions on whether and when and to whom to reveal matters of sexual orientation should be respected as private. That said, I am not at all opposed to a person being outed when their behavior, in words or acts, harm others. The harm can be direct - for example telling a gay joke that shames or hurts a self-identified gay person in front of others. The harm can also be more indirect - for example telling that same joke may in fact keep a person who is experiencing confusion and curiosity in their sexual orientation from seeking clarity or coming out.

But I strongly support and endorse outing when the person being outed has engaged in conduct that is harmful because of their position of power. That power takes many forms - persons who are viewed as having a special level relationship of trust and persons who can wield political and financial power over others.

It can be a physician or psychologist that tells someone that a gay lifestyle is sick. It can be a pastor or rabbi that tells a gay person they are going to hell. It can be an employer, banker or other person that wields financial control using a person's sexuality to deny them a job, a promotion, a loan, etc. And the height of hypocrisy is the legislator, judge or other person in government that uses their position to deny gays rights, or otherwise abuses their position of power to the detriment of gays when they themselves are gay or lesbian. It is bad enough when non-gays abuse power and harm gays but a gay deliberately harming another gay person for the sake of appearances, etc. is the worst.

6. This does not help us. This will breed hate for us.

They do not have the right to affect other's lives this way. Period. It is not up to him to out gay people. This is a disgusting and disgraceful attempt at doing something good. They're talking about staffers too? Regular people who are trying to make a living in Washington? This is going to do way more harm than good.

9. by "us" do you mean gay people and friends of gay people

or liberals/progressives/Democrats in general. Because both groups have had the opportunity to make this kind of movie for years and years and have not taken it, while the gay hate-mongers have continued to oppress gay people.

Maybe this will help stop this behavior.

7. I would agree

To out someone is not reporting. To report on people being suppressed is one thing but shouldn't name names. Just as if someone didn't know they were adopted and found out in the media. It's a private issue unless they had been told beforehand and gave their consent.

I have to say if the Republicans are smart (and they likely aren't) they'll try to leapfrog the Democrats by calling for complete acceptance of gays in marriage, equal rights, etc - calling it an infringement of government into personal lives... but we all know that ideology stops at their bibles and that is where they'll draw the line. Even if moderates in the GOP start to take on the tone of acceptance, the far right will cling to that inbred mantra of hate like a humping dog to its favorite stuffed animal.
