In many elections, Republicans do not do outreach to blacks and Latinos because they think they will get more votes, but so that white moderates will not think they are going too overboard on racism and will vote Republican. Republican outreach is a Potemkin village not to do outreach to any actual minorities, but to try to fool white moderates.

Obviously it goes back to the civil war, confederate flag, which states resisted integration the most for the longest period of time (it's relative I know), etc.

With that said, yes, racism is everywhere BUT often times it's more insidious/hidden in the North. Some would argue that actually makes it worse, but it's hard to argue that more people *tend* to be more open and blatant about it in the South (I know my dad in TX, originally from IL, wouldn't argue with that).

22. Proper use of the word "racism"

For a lawyer, Cenk is not very precise about the definition of the word. Racism should be reserved for hatred against other races (setting aside the fact that there is just one human race and allowing for the partitioning of it). Laws against this idiot's brand of hatred are that it is wrong to discriminate against national origin. Similarly, discrimination against Muslims is not racism, but religious discrimination.

This is not meant to be a pedantic observation, but to show the futility of the tactic of labeling all discrimination as "racism". When you lump religious discrimination in with ethnic discrimination in with homophobia and other kinds of hatred in with racism, you have given the haters safety in numbers. As Cenk rightly observes, there are levels of hatred and bigotry, and some are widely tolerated. To combat that, it would be a much better idea to 'divide and conquer' and isolate each individual hatred and show it to be stupid and ignorant. So do everyone a favor and quit overusing the word 'racism'. Target the hatred and isolate it and then it will crumble of its own irrationality.

I don't see gays making any progress by accusing homophobes of being racists. They have made much progress since Stonewall, all by targeting a particular type of hatred, homophobia. The problem with targeting hate, or racism, is that it has such a broad definition, everybody can be against it in the abstract. How many times have we heard from X-tians "we don't hate the sinner, we hate the sin" when promoting their str8 based discrimination? The way to call people off of their right wing hate of the day is to call it for what it is, not just some catchall category. You are not going to make them tolerant accepting people in one step, each one of their hates is going to have to be pruned away, one by one.

are targeted because of their race period. Those who discriminate against anyone of Middle-eastern descent don't need to know or ask if the person they're targeting is a Muslim. Denotation v. Connotation comes in to play here.

He could be more specific and call it nationalism instead of racism, but racism has a connotation that is widely understood as more insidious and odious than nationalism.

Back to denotation, race is denoted as "a group of persons related by common descent or heredity." Sounds like that could easily apply to Mexicans as to Asians. You know darned well that idiot was calling them primitive because of not only their nationality, but because their descent is hispano-mesoamerican.
