"Mike" remained the common spelling for years after 61: I lived decades of my life before I ever saw "mic" written instead of "mike." suppose if I were a recording engineer, I might prefer the visually-obvious "mic" in print, and I do remember plenty of printed instruction sheets for various products that included "mic." with the period

If you want to spell it "mic," go ahead. I'll probably stick with "mike" as that was the standard spelling that I saw when growing up
