1. K & R. I'm always amazed at how thoughtful TV once was

Corporate consolidation, the abolition of the Fairness Doctrine, and the quick-cut sound-bite era have done a huge disservice to the American tolerance and capacity for careful thought. If you've seen The U.S. vs. John Lennon you realize that Lennon not only was a week-long co-host of the Mike Douglas Show but that he was actually allowed to take part in choosing the guests for that week, which included people like Bobby Seale as I recall. That sort of scenario is unthinkable for today's commercial broadcast networks.

Of course, it was King's position on Vietnam that probably signed his death warrant.
