In my opinion Charles Bolden is one of the very best appointments the Obama administration has done yet, but I admit that I'm biased.
In case you didn't know, on May 23, President Obama announced the nomination of Bolden as NASA Administrator.
In February 1995 I had the chance to interview Charles Bolden when he was the Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy.
I was a Navy Journalist (JO2) working for Navy/Marine Corps News in Washington D.C.
Then, Col. Charles Bolden, USMC, opened up to us and described the sights and thoughts of his first mission into space.
As he described first seeing the continent of Africa he recalled how emotional it was and became pretty emotional in front of us. You see, he was one of the first African-American astronauts, he had reached for the stars, and he was looking at ... well, if you can't make the connection then you don't know American history. He didn't have to point out why it was emotional, of course we knew.
My commanding officer rivved me later for pulling a 'Barbara Walters' and asking a question that resulted in Col. Bolton getting emotional. It was just rivving though, as the interview was one of the best that ever unfolded for me while I was at N/MCN.
Congratulations Mr. Bolton ... you deserve the post in heading NASA and in my opinion are the very best for the job!!!
Ooh Rah Shipmate!!!
I hope everyone here at DU enjoys it and 'kicks' it so others will too.
