Lieberman waves another man's saber, the Iranians threaten cataclysmic response, and Giancarlo Giannini's translator provides a Beat poet's words set to a jazz tempo aria that could serve as opening soundtrack for yet another BushCo disaster. . .

1. I just checked this out
from our library. Wertmueller is one of my favorite directors.

And I had forgotten about that opening canticle. Masterful!

2. This is the film where the prisoner makes eyes at the lady warden in the boxer shorts.

4. Yes. The lengths to which Giannini's character goes to survive are limitless. . .
his seduction of the Nazi prison camp director is but one of many acts he willfully endures, all in the interest of life at any cost.

3. K&R! ONE OF THE GREATEST ANTI-WAR MOVIES OF ALL TIMES!
Thanks for this. Always timely!
Loved that it mentions those who don't get involved in politics.

5. The entire film, as well as all of "Swept Away," is evidently available on YouTube. . .
and yes, this opening sequence stays with you -- it's haunted me since I first saw it, some thirty years ago.

"The ones who believe Christ is Santa Claus as a young man. . . oh yeah."

7. Good to hear. . .
I thought the entire film was available on You Tube, but learned last night not all 14 parts are available. Best to rent it. Great, great film.
