Michael Moore addresses press on Barack Obama and Blue Dog Democrats' approach to health care reform at Public Citizen headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009. (30 Minutes)

MOORE: This is such a cruel system we have.

First to President Obama: we have been in such a state of hope since last November, a state that we haven't felt in quite some time... it made us feel very good and very proud to be part of this country, that our fellow Americans would do the right thing. And they came by a very large margin for change, real change... and it saddens me, when I see you President Obama out there stumping for health care reform and there is no enthusiastic support for your position. It feels like you're out there all alone. We look at the other side and they're out there in full force, even though they're the minority, even though they only represent 25 % of the American public, they're there at the town hall meetings, they're there at the teabagger rallies - especially my favorite one, the one last week, where they were... the pictures of them using the publicly funded rest rooms on The Mall. They've been vocal, they've been organized, they've been FUNDED.

And you probably turn around and you wonder who's got your back, because you seem to be out there all alone. The reason for that, with all due respect, is that you started with a compromise. Anybody who's bought a car, anybody who's bought or sold their house or negotiated anything, knows you don't start with your final position, you don't start with a compromise. You start with everything that you want. Everything that you believe in.

And in 2003, when you decided to run for the Senate, you said you were in favor of a single-payer health care system. And I believe in your heart you still believe that. But you started in a place where you had no wiggle room, nothing was left, and, it was a position that did not energize the base. Did not, you're not going to get millions of people out there going 'Yes, give us the public option where the private companies still get to call the shots.' How do you get people enthused about that? That's why you're out there and alone on this. You don't need to be alone.

Millions, tens of millions of Americans right now, would be right out there with you, right out in the streets, right there on the Internet with their emails, up here on Capitol Hill jamming the phone lines, if you just did what the people wanted. The majority of the people of this country are behind you. Come on!

I mean, politicians, they kill to have this support. You've got us all. You had us all.

So. You need to hit the reset button. That's all. Just hit the reset button and go back to the drawing board. Rep. Weiner is there at the drawing board already. He's there with Sen. Sanders. And they've got the legislation that the majority of the American people want.

Not only do upwards to three-quarters of the American people want universal health care, and support the public option, a majority depending on which poll you look at, either a simple majority or a plurality of Americans support single payer, support Medicare For All. You're already there. You're not out on some limb. You're not having to take a risk. You've already got the people with you, and we will be there with you every step of the way.

When you held that meeting with all the bankers, the heads of all the banks, the private meeting you had with them in the White House, I just want to read the report from that day that was in the paper. It said: "President Barack Obama wasn't in a mood to hear them out (as they went on with their explanations with why they needed trillions of dollars of our tax money). He stopped the conversation and offered a blunt reminder of the public's reaction to such explanations. He said: 'Be careful how you make those statements, gentleman. The public isn't buying that. My administration,' the President added, 'is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.'" That's what he told the bankers.

What we're here, today, to tell you, Mr. President, is that we have got your back. We're here to let you know that majority of Americans support you, and that we stand between you and the pitchforks that are being held out by the private insurance companies that want to destroy this country.

To the Democrats in Congress, who don't quite get it: I want to offer a personal pledge. I - and a lot of other people - have every intention of removing you from Congress in the next election if you stand in the way of health care legislation that the people want. That is not a hollow or idle threat. We will come to your districts and we will work against you, first in the primary, and, if we have to, in the general election. You don't think so? You think that we're just going to go along with you because you are Democrats?

You should think again. This is the No. 1 domestic issue on people's minds right now. It's the No. 1 cause of bankruptcies in this country. Medical bills. It's the No. 1 cause of foreclosures in this country. Medical bills.

We will organize the thousands of people in your district who have suffered as a result of this cruel health care system that we have - we will organize them and we will come after you and we will remove you from office. Make no mistake about that. You had better get behind the President. If you think you were afraid of a few people at a town hall meeting, you haven't seen anything yet. And let me just say, there are some people in this room, if you remember back to the election of 2000, that are fairly reckless individuals when it comes to politics. They don't really care - when they see a hypocrite, when they see somebody who's turned their back on the people who put them into office, they will be relentless, relentless in working against you. Even if it means that the Democrat doesn't win.

DON'T TAKE OUR VOTES FOR GRANTED.

- snip -

The worst thing you have to fear though, isn't that people are going to vote for Republicans, you have to worry about the fact that because you have so debilitated the people who do support the Democratic party and who support our President, where they see time and time again what they want as the people never happens - and here's what they do: they don't vote. You need their vote.

- snip -

Final thing I want to say before opening up to questions, is that, President Obama, I have a lot of faith in you. I know where you come from. You come from the working class. You were raised by a single mother and your grandparents. You had the good fortune to be allowed in to Harvard University and after you graduated from there, you didn't choose to go to Wall Street or into some law firm to make a million dollars a year, you chose to go to Chicago, to work in the inner city, where you would make no money.

Oh, and by the way, on your way there, you changed your name back to your original name - Barack Obama, not exactly the move of a politician... you just went with your heart...

You are one of us. You come from us. This is not the time to desert us. This is not the time to be the representative for the private health insurance industry. We need you to stand up. Stand up. Be bold. Be brave. Be strong... And we want universal health care for every single American and we want it controlled in a single-payer system, like the Medicare and the VA and all the other 'socialized' medicine we have in this country. And as you've said over and over again to the American people, it will be cheaper, it will cost us less and we'll be a healthier country as a result...

And the Democrats in Congress, find your spine. Read the polls. And see us coming. Thank you very much.

MICHAEL MOORE:

First of all, thank you, all of you, for being here today. The, um, what you were saying about the women, and how they suffer the most from this... I remember after my film 'SiCKO' came out getting a call from someone who works the desk at one of the health insurance companies, where they have to decide whether or not they are going to deny the claim or not that someone filed.

He told me the story of a woman who had actually very good health insurance that covered psychological help in addition to medical help. And she had submitted, and her doctor had submitted, a claim for psychological treatment due to the PTSD that she was suffering from having been raped. And this individual from the insurance company said to me: "I was told to deny the claim on the basis of a pre-existing condition."

And I said: "And what was the pre-existing condition?" I expected to hear what I've been hearing over the years, you know - she'd had had acne as a teenager, she'd caught a cold a few years ago that had developed into something else, you know.

And he said: "I was told to deny the claim based on a pre-existing condition. The pre-existing condition was that she was raped." The fact that she had gone to the hospital and received treatment after she was raped meant that this particular thing that she was now applying for was something that had happened beforehand - he was just, he was practically in tears on the phone - that they were essentially now trying to get rid of her off the rolls. This is just one small example of what I've heard over the years, and, it...

This is such a cruel system we have.

No other Western democracy does this... to their people. They think it's important to have a secure country, yet they have a healthy people. You'd think every conservative and Republican and pro-war person out there would say to themselves: 'You know, we're not going to be able to defend ourselves if we're sick.' We have a diabetes epidemic in process with our children right now. What kind of country are we going to end up with, if we allow this to happen.

But our purpose of being here today is not to direct this so much to the Republicans, who - and somebody has to explain to me the logic of this - when two-thirds to three-quarters of the American public say they want the public option, at the very least, why would you oppose that? It doesn't make any political sense, does it? Because, geez, two-thirds to three-quarters of the people want it. Seems like you'd want to make some political hay by being in support of it yourself.

They're that beholding to these health insurance companies, the hospital corporations, the hospital chains, that they're actually willing to risk re-election, because of how they've been lobbied - 1.4 million dollars a day is being spent right now by the health care lobby.

Our purpose for being here today is to send a message to President Obama and to the Democrats in Congress.

First to President Obama: We have been in such a state of hope since last November, a state that we haven't felt in quite some time That day you were elected, Nov. 4th, 2008, was one of the most important days, really, in our lives. It made us feel very good and very proud to be part of this country, that our fellow Americans would do the right thing. And they came out, not in a close election, but by a very large margin and said that they wanted change, real change, the change that you promised. We continue to support you. We know that you've inherited, not just one catastrophe, but a number of catastrophes. Who would want this job? Thank you for taking it. God bless you for taking it. For being willing to try to undo the mess that's been created in recent years.

And it saddens me, when I see you, President Obama, out there stumping for health care reform and there is no enthusiastic support for your position. It feels like you're out there all alone. We look at the other side and they're out there in full force, even though they're the minority, even though they only represent 25 % of the American public, they're there at the town hall meetings, they're there at the teabagger rallies - especially my favorite one, the one last week, where they were... pictures of them using the publicly funded rest rooms on The Mall. The majority of the people of this country are behind you. Come on!

(applause)

I mean, politicians, they kill to have this support. You've got us all. You had us all. You haven't lost us.

So. You need to hit the reset button. That's all. Just hit the reset button and go back to the drawing board. Rep. Weiner is there at the drawing board already. He's there with Sen. Sanders. And they've got the legislation that the majority of the American people want.

Even if it means that the Democrat doesn't win.

DON'T TAKE OUR VOTES FOR GRANTED.

Don't do that. Because we'll find Republicans who are smart enough to realize that the majority of Americans want universal health care. That's right. That's absolutely right. Don't take this for granted.

The worst thing you have to fear though, isn't that people are going to vote for Republicans, you have to worry about the fact that because you have so debilitated the people who do support the Democratic Party and who support our President, where they see time and time again what they want as the people never happens - and here's what they do: they don't vote. They stop going to the polls. You need their votes. They're not going to vote for Republicans. There are people, you know, myself, and, where I come from, Flint, Michigan - I don't even remember a Republican being elected for office, uh... ever, from where I come from. It's not in our DNA to consider doing that. But I do know a lot of people who have given up. And will give up again. Barack Obama re-engergized them; he brought them out to the polls. But they, and our young people, who had their first experience with politics, at some point are just going to throw their hands up and say 'That's it. I've had it. What's the point? What's the use?' And I don't want to see that happen.

I've posted on Huffington Post this morning the 'Thirteen Reasons Why The Current Health Care Bills In Congress Don't Solve Our Health Care Crisis.' And I put this together with the California Nurses Association. And I encourage you to go to the Huffington Post and read these 13 reasons. It's very clear, very concise why the bills that are currently being pushed by the Democratic Party establishment and somewhat seems to be, the White House seems to be in support of these, why this simply won't work.

The final thing I want to say before opening up to questions, is that, President Obama, I have a lot of faith in you. I know where you come from. You come from the working class. You were raised by a single mother, and your grandparents. You had the good fortune to be allowed in to Harvard University and after you graduated from there, you didn't choose to go to Wall Street or into some law firm to make a million dollars a year, you chose to go to Chicago, to work in the inner city, where you would make no money.

Oh, and by the way, on your way there, you changed your name back to its original name - Barack Obama, not exactly the move of a politician, not exactly the move of somebody who was calculating, geez, if I run for office someday, I don't know if that Barack name is going to do me much good. You didn't think like that. You didn't think like that. You just went with your heart. And you went with the way your mother and your grandparents raised you to be.

You are one of us. You come from us. This is not the time to desert us. This is not the time to be the representative for the private health insurance industry. We need you to stand up. Stand up. Be bold. Be brave. Be strong. We've got your back. And we want universal health care for every single American and we want it controlled in a single-payer system, like the Medicare and the VA and all the other 'socialized' medicine that we have in this country. That's all we're asking for.

And as you've said over and over again to the American people, this will actually be cheaper, it will cost us less, and we will be healthier as a result of it, because when people have coverage, they go to get help. They go to get help, and they're not doing that now. And so, we help to perpetuate a sick nation.

And the Democrats in Congress, find your spine. Read the polls. And see us coming. Thank you very much.

Mark my words. It won't be in 2012, nor perhaps the next or the next after that. But he will be. And I hope I'm still alive to see it.

But I was worried that his current movie would distract him. I'm so glad it isn't. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Michael Moore is far more blue than any of those bastard dogs (why do we call them blue dogs? I like dogs. I don't like DINOs).

55. Blue Dogs is...
...a play on the term "Yellow Dog" Democrat. Yellow Dogs said they would rather vote for a yellow dog than a Republican. The Blue Dogs suggest they've been choked blue by the "extreme" left of the Democratic Party. In truth, the Blue Dogs are the last real Republicans.

It was just used rhetorically, and there was NEVER concrete direction for that "hope".

I guessed it was going to be exactly what it is, but I held my judgement in check until I saw all the Republicans appointed to high offices, and the silence where there should have been leadership.

It's up to US, folks.

We are the HOPE we've been waiting for, but we, ourselves, seem to be still waiting for someone to lead us out of Egypt.

It's up to US.

Are you ready?

11. Hope everyone is going to see Michael Moores film This Friday night
"Capitalism: A Love Story"

"You hear commentators blaming the shiftless people who took out the mortgages: They're living beyond their means! They really pushed that after the crash -- that these low income people and their subprime mortgages did this to us. It had a racial overtone in it and was really a little creepy. What they never say is, the number one reason people go bankrupt in this country is medical bills.

"I carefully picked my foreclosed people for this film. One, his farm was in the family for four decades. The family down in Miami, 22 years in the house. These are people who got snookered.

"Elizabeth Warren, the law professor from Harvard, she has taken those like refinancing contracts into her law class, and she hands them out she says, Okay, tell me what the interest rate is. You read the 50 pages, you can't figure it out. A law student or professor can't figure out how it's gonna balloon. It's deliberately confusing. "

Moore argues the current crisis was caused by a capitalist love of money that transcends all other motivations: "It's about how the wealthiest one percent, who have more financial wealth than the combined lower 95%, not only love their money, they love our money. They love everybody's money and they want as much of it as possible and their love is so blind that they recklessly go about taking our money and spending it any way they see fit; usually in making bets on bets -- derivatives.

"One guy comes to the table and takes nine slices of the pie and everybody else at the table has to split the last slice. That's not democracy; that's not what Jesus said. All the great religions actually say the same thing, they all have the same basic beliefs about how to treat the poor and how the rich are not to suck everything up and make life miserable for everybody else."

But even now, I said, we hear about executives paying themselves multi-million-dollar bonuses.

"They do it because they can get away with it. It's been a year since the crash and not one single regulation has been put back in place. Why hasn't there been more outrage? I'm doing my part. In Pittsburgh I showed the movie to a bunch of steelworkers, and during that scene where
the judge is putting kids in the privatized juvenile homes so he can get a little kickback money, this guy like rises half out of his seat and he starts shouting at the screen, Shame, shame, shaaaaame! People are ready to rumble."

Quoting Michael Moore: "You think that we're just going to go along with you because you are Democrats?"

Think again, you so called Democrats. This is your 2-minute warning....you either run the "Option" crossing the goal line. Or we will spear you out of the game!

Michael Moore is a true patriot. In every sense of the word.

15. 2 things
1) I got a lot of insults for saying the same thing in a state post on DU. But I still respect you.

2) I have a friend whose husband used to work for GM. They have a big assembly plant in our home town. About 3 months ago they finally sold their GM stock (the fact they waited so long tells you something) and when I referred to Micheal Moore's first film she posted that "MM is part of the problem - we never listen to him and we don't like him".

I do not expect to see anything new in his current film but might go to it anyway. Maybe I should use the ticket price in campaign donations instead though.

37. Anderson Cooper had an impassioned Moore on tonight. And his
message was the exact same as this one, though twenty minutes shorter.

As far as I am concerned, all my time and energy from this moment forward is for whatever this man wants. There will not be more democratic lying cheating sniveling sell outs on my phone contact list. MM has been speaking the truth ever since he first starting making "Roger and Me."

And after Fahrenheit 911, MM was worth over 100 million bucks, and he could have retired and not kept up with his usual 24/7 grueling schedule.

To Woolsey, Kucicinch, Maxine Waters, and a few others, I have your back.

The rest of the Dems have their big time Insurance "Providers" to get their snaps from. This concession stand will no longer be serving them.

34. Great stuff, He made a really good point at the end there......
that you really gotta hand it to repubs, they are ruthless and get what they want because of it. They do not compromise on anything, there is none of this bi-partisanship bullshit, it's either their way or the highway. Not only that but their party isn't filled with "RINO's" like our party is filled with "DINO's".

He is absolutely right on Obama starting with a compromise, I don't know what he (Obama) was thinking. He should have started with single payer first and then worked from there, instead we had to start with a public option and had to compromise it down to mandates now.

Anyways, great clip, I can't wait until this weekend though, his movie is sure to be good.

46. Moore isa brilliant artist and story teller. k*r But he's naive in addressing these people
If they were capable of hearing, they wouldn't be doing what they're doing.

Personalities DO NOT matter. Let's just give all of them numbers and then we can do things
like address appeals.

To #1 & 2: You run the country, etc.

Then it doesn't matter who they are, all that should matter are the issues.

If #1 doesn't get it or #S1 (Harry Ried) is an ass, well it is just a number.

There is no hope for these people getting it. It's not about who they are, it's about what we need.

except to perhaps vote.. really think that all the work these idiots in DC are doing is ironing out how to pay for a single-payer system like other countries get.. and why aren't they. Many people are really thinking they are going to get good things. They voted for Obama. Obama said health care. that's what people need and want desperately in this country. I wish the leg. section could be trusted not to pay atten. to. It is the reason they got the dem majority.. so they could pass h.c. reform.

61. Anorher thing Michael Moore should have added about..
the people who give up on voting or anything is,the fact that once they give up it won't be a pretty picture because once they give up a lot of people will become very destructive to our society and it is pretty bad already.

I agree with everything he said. I am so,so angry at the bluedogs who are in reality RepubliCONS.I can't say what I really want to say about Baucas and the others but, everytime I see the vote the blood rushes to my brain, these people really think we are something to play with.

I say it is time to kick ass and show these who is the real majority. My friends and I have been talking about it all of yesterday and this morning and have been hitting the emails and planning our strategies to inform others about these traitors.

64. My fear is
corporate power has been allowed to grow too strong. Their influence is all pervading. It has gone unchecked for too long. The last eight years were the breaking point.

We can see by ridiculous claims made by Republican lawmakers just how deeply they are invested in protecting corporate interests. While some red state Democrats moderate their language about health care reform, and the public option in particular, one can easily read between the lines to hear the underlying message. And that message is "The insurance industry doesn't want reform, so you will not have it."

I hope my fears are unjustified.

Leave Your “Blame the Republicans” Emails Here!
By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday September 29, 2009 5:05 pm

I know my inbox is full of emails blaming the Republicans for killing the public option on the Senate Finance Committee. They're hilarious.

That's right, the GOP did it!

Leave yours in the comments. Maybe we'll have a drinking game to see how fast each one starts pimping triggers.

It seems to have escaped their notice that Democrats did the exact same thing they're blaming the Republicans for. Just enough of them, in fact, to make sure the public option failed.

Funny how that always works, isn't it?

72. still hurts does it?
Still stinging from Hillary losing? Wow.

Still refusing to admit that it was the Florida Democratic committee that was to blame for breaking with the national party over primary dates? When they knew what would happen if they did?

Still upset even though, despite a last minute flip-flop by Mrs. Clinton, both Hillary and Obama AGREED with the DNC on its decision to not allow delegates from Florida for that faux pas?

And now its not only the DNC at fault but both Obama, who had no power over the DNC and publicly stayed out of it, and MICHAEL MOORE? Really flyarm.....I mean really? He was a private citizen, a film maker, who was at the time i believe promoting Sicko. Why is it on his shoulders to wade into the Democratic party's inside squabbles? Besides its ridiculous to blame MM for the Florida Dems stupid selfish decision to break the party rules.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

As far as your second point, I agree. Although you have to admit the Repukes are not so much on a mission to kill the public option as they are on a much greater mission to kill (politically at the very least) Obama. The few Blue Dogs are at least aware of why they are obstructing - pure greed.

and it wouldn't matter to me one iota who i voted for..my vote was still stolen..

oh and PS in 2004 i was an elected Dem delegate for my state of Fla..and gave a boat load of money to the dem party..and brought in a boat load of money for the DNC and candidate..

I helped run the Dem party headquarters and housed the field rep for the I-4 corridor anchor county...and I was co-ordinator for all volunteers in my very large county!

oh and I went out state wide and did public speaking for the dem party.

no more!

not another dime ..not another minute of my time!

oh and PS..it still hurts from Bush stealing my vote..now my own party did..so it seems, I have no reason to ever vote again!!

oh and pss..i was on the DNC rapid response team from 2004 for 3 1/2 years until i saw the manipulation and what was going on to steal the votes of Florida ..my state.

and PSSS..I was a co-captain of a very large caucus in Iowa ....yes i went to Iowa ..and South Carolina to make sure votes were not stolen..but i assure you they were and the DNC ignored all of the protests from the captains and co-captains of the Iowa caucus's..

and PSSSS..,.My hubby and I Paid for a state audit in my large Fla county of our DRE voting machines and helped get rid of them for our state..the very bill the DNC used to steal our votes!
