Even among anti-war groups I've heard some really asinine defenses of capitalistic greed and imperialist policies. Its like some believe that these actions are case specific and not systemic.
Exit polls in 2004 showed that about 40% of Democratic voters believed that Saddam Hussein was connected
to 9/11. Hard to run a democracy when you deal with the ingrained belief system where facts don't matter.

That is the first time I ever heard him loose it....but it was well deserved.

What I sensed from the caller is anger...he is angry about something that may have nothing to do with politics...perhaps because of a fear of some kind.
It is the only explanation I can think of for someone who seems basically intelligent, to suspend logic to such a degree as that.

It's like they believe the poor don't create jobs, they never stop to think that if poor don't buy a businesses products then that business will cut back on the product they make which means less jobs.

18. I was reading in "The Blank Slate" that

in situations where there is no recourse to, like, "call 911", signals must be sent that say "don't fuck with me". This is (one reason) why tribes attack each other, or gangs and the mob have murder initiations and that kind of thing. What kind of signal does it send when the US gets itself into 2 (3 if you count Vietnam) machismo displays that they can't win or deliver on? And it's obvious to everyone on the planet we cannot "win" the ones we're in now. This also has to do with why many feel we cannot just leave all at once but must save face somehow by a "reasoned" and orderly "withdrawal".

Anyway... interesting ideas to muse over. Much more helpful than "they're evil doers". But then these new fangled ideas are science... and we know how unreliable science is!

As a scientist, I do not need someone screaming in my ear or mixing in fart jokes while I am working on manuscripts, etc. (the occasional losing it like this segment is fun and not too distracting). Thom's show is on during my most productive part of the day, and it is nice to hear sober analysis while I am conducting sober analysis.

Thom is a populist liberal Democrat like me, and so we are closely related ideologically.

I don't think I have ever seen him so pissed. That caller was an absolute jerk off. I used to be a conservative when I was younger and have found most of those I affiliated with were as dense and caloused to the suffering of others as that caller.
