3. I don't know how you'd seperate sick from the more healthy that can vary in life, it must be down to

55 and that's it.

4. Obviously they can't say "sick vs. healthy".

But (for example) they could say that only people who aren't offered an insurance plan by their employer can buy in, which might indirectly have some of the same effect, not to mention it would greatly reduce the effectiveness of the plan. Besides, "healthy" over the age of 55 is relative. 50 is a critical age at which the risk for all sorts of health problems that require regular testing and care come into play.

The only thing I like about this so far is that it *might* be opened up to everyone down the road. If that happens, it's worth it, and there will be real leverage and cost reduction for all. If not, it'll be a disastrous giveaway with some nice token gestures that don't help nearly enough people nearly enough.

reason it's being considered at the moment . So, I think it looks fairly rosy, it's all about giving them a congress to be able to expand it though. With this starting in 2010 and show real reform for people instantly is huge, from my perspective. First objective should be to show government can work for people, and I think this can do that. One demographic Pres. Obama has to convince is 55s and over if he can convince them he can thenbe able to do more.

Full disclosure - I'm a cynical smartass, and in that vein, I present the following:

I think the most truthful segment were the 5.5% who answered "Don't Know." I think if more people were honest with themselves and understood that most of their "knowledge" of the issue comes from spin...well, I would hope that the number would at least be near 50% who admit they really don't understand it - which would still be more than the number who understand it in Congress...

13. Did anyone else understand the insurance company representative

to say that there would be NO government money? Does that mean no subsidies for low income people?

I really don't care about the effect on the government's budget. I want to know what share of GDP we will spend on health care under this plan. I have a suspicion that this plan will do nothing to reduce the scandalous share of our GDP that we spend on health care. I fear this will simply mean that Americans are forced to pay every higher amounts for health care insurance.

The purpose of the public option was to provide competition with health insurance companies and push down the overhead costs on our health care insurance.

I support Medicare for all and certainly Medicare for 55 and up. So I basically support the plan. But let's remember that this plan will do nothing for the 30 year-old mother of three if her employer does not pay for her insurance and two of her children are disabled or have chronic illnesses or conditions.

For people 55 and over, this will be great provided that health care is subsidized for those who cannot work or cannot get jobs and have very little money. Also, how would means testing for 55 to 65 work for getting subsidies if such are available? We can't impoverish people 55 to 65 to charge them for
Medicare coverage. We can't ask them to spend down their savings before they are 65 just to buy into Medicare. This could be devastating -- a short-term solution that would just delay catastrophic economic effects for another 5-6 years.

If the Insurance Industry and KKKarl Rove love it - then my hackles are up...

And I don't trust ANY politicians in there at present - even weener and the other ones...so their sudden capitulation is suspect at best...and I figured it all along when the tires met the road...

Color me pessimistically not ready to cheer and more likely to feel we've been royally shafted - again...and so far, with the Yoo Torture ruling and all the other repuke crap that Obama has CONTINUED - I trust obama about as far as I can throw him...not at all...

16. You know what I want someone to calculate in a committee?

How many people will die waiting to turn fifty-five? I have lost over a dozen friends from school who died before they were 40 to health issues that may have been caught if they had easily accessible health care. Allowing preventative medicine as simple as regular check-ups for everyone would vastly decrease the need for expensive medical procedures later in life. Maybe there's the rub. The Medical Industrial Complex (Insurance and Hospitals) don't make enough off perfectly healthy clients.

Remember, this, like all progressive legislation, is a step, not an end. If Medicare for 55-year-olds works like we think it will, then Medicare for 45-year-olds will follow, and so on.

I'm certainly not going to base my opinion of the legislation on the short-term focused opinions of the insurance industry, happy or otherwise.
