Dean's two central points: (1) Saying it's "now or never" on health care reform presents a false dichotomy. Our health care system is in crisis, he says. We need to fix it now, it won't be another twenty years before we get the chance if the Senate bill fails. (2) The Senate bill fails to reform the system; indeed, it expands the current system which is already failing because it is too expensive.

Dean's bottom line: Don't give up on the fight for real reform. Say no to the Senate bill, and get something real done.

Dean said the removal of the Medicare buy-in made the bill not worth supporting, and urged Dem leaders to start over with the process of reconciliation in the interview, which is set to air at 5:50 PM today on Vermont Public Radio, political reporter Bob Kinzel confirms to me.

"This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. Honestly the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill, go back to the House, start the reconciliation process, where you only need 51 votes and it would be a much simpler bill."

Kinzel added that Dean essentially said that if Democratic leaders cave into Joe Lieberman right now they’ll be left with a bill that’s not worth supporting.

3. You know...back in 2004

I was a Dean *darlin* and was truly pissed beyond belief when the media basically trashed his run with that utterly ridiculous sound bite of his *eyaaaheee* call. (made all the more ludicrous when you realized it had to do with the sound system, and why the F couldn't he make a whoop if he was happy anyway????)

It pissed me off so much I was turned off of following serious politics with serious passion for a lonnnng time. I thought Dean was too good for the damned political circus 2004 became.

As much as I want to see a big win for the people of this country regarding health care, and as much as I want Barack Obama to accomplish wonderful things that will live up to my faith in him...I can't come to grips with this watered down bill. Settling? Is that what we want to do if there is a possibility of really doing great things if the Democrats would toughen up just LITTLE and be a lot stronger in the face of jerk-off obstructionists???

I agree with Mr. Dean. Is this a win for a win's sake and not a genuine reform bill? It's pains me to think that yeah, it is. A fair bill that gets a few very decent things done just doesn't live up to the GREAT bill it should be with the party in power, in power!

I was referring to the original bills (public option or with Medicare expansion) - I went back and noted 'original' to reflect that.

There is no reason to vote yes on something just to push it through - it is a disservice to taxpayers. If they can't get this bill passed, they need to do reconciliation for whatever they can get and eliminate the kickbacks to the Insurance industry. Then, they need to start regulating the hell out of the Insurance industry. I would think that anti-trust statutes, anti-racketeering and other laws on the books should be pursued to the greatest extent possible.
