School officials in suburban Dallas have given an in-school suspension to 4-year-old Taylor Pugh because his hair is considered too long. Pugh's parents say officials are 'more concerned with the boy's hair than his education.'

1. It's hard to tell what is dumber
a public school with a dress code that includes hair length, or the four year old allowed to tell his parents how long his hair should be.

5. I disagree with the hair length policy but
I'll take the 4 year old in charge of his parents as the dumber thing.

he wants to grow it to donate to Locks of Love. They are supporting him in this. So it's not like he's doing it just to be a brat.

26. Why should a parent tell a 4 year old how long his/her hair should be. Could anything matter less?
of all think things parents have to worry about

39. Not to me, hair was always the least of my 'things to get riled
up about' with my boys. Not drinking underage, not doing drugs, being decent human beings toward the fellow men/women were WAY higher on my list. Not stealing, etc. much higher priorities for me.

They've had long hair, hair super short and spiked, back to long...I don't care about their hair. It's one of the few things that they have any control over anymore anyway, especially at school and I don't understand the distraction part of it, just sounds like bullshit to me.

2. Sorry to pick on this one particular state, but I gotta ask...
Why is a large chunk of Texas(not all mind you, but a big chunk)so freaking obsessed with trying to keep the 1950's going for the REST OF ETERNITY?

What is it about the idea of personal freedom that they find so terrifying and threatening?

12. Mesquite ISD has a draconian dress code
Many districts (including mine) would have no problem with the hair lenghth. My son, who is in 4th grade, has longer hair than that boy.

Even teachers and administrators are subject to the severe dress code of Mesquite ISD. Male teachers aren't allowed to have any facial hair.

You're not sorry to pick on our state, large or small chunk of it.

But you know Alaska has some pretty large chunks of land, that well, you know I'd be sorry to pick on too. :)

4. Hmmm. I tend to think that if you don't like the rules of
a voluntary organization, then leave the organization. I wonder if there are other schools the boy could attend, and would he be willing to switch over the hair issue.

14. He probably could, but
I can see why they want to bring attention to this issue. I clicked on this thread thinking that the boy's hair was down to his ankles and would present a safety hazard. When I was in junior high school in the mid-seventies, there were many boys whose hair was the same length as Taylor's (and some even longer). Long hair on males is certainly nothing new. And I take it that the hair length policy does not apply to girls, so there is the sexist aspect to it.

23. Yes, I get that and I agree that the rule is ridiculous.
But it's like gay kids who go to a Catholic school and are shocked to be expelled when their sexuality is discovered.... On the other hand, I respect people's attempts to fight the unjust system. The whole situation is ridiculous and the school's dress code is ridiculous. And sexist, you're right.

33. Right and no, I don't know if it is or not.
I know here you're stuck with going to the school in your district... of course here, we have a dress code too: skirts must reach fingertip length, but there are boys who wear such skirts and nobody gives them any shit. Maine, the way life should be, but colder.

40. I have to ask, why does age really matter?
One of my sons had his hair down to the middle of his shoulder blades and when he decided to cut it, he donated it to Locks of Love. He had it cut short, but it's been long, short, long, short. All 3 of mine have had long hair at some point, one has it short - it curls and he hates it, the other 2 have long hair.

I have more to worry about than their freakin' hair.

10. You know what, you really, really need to cut this shit out
Your hatred, bigotry and your snide remarks about the Texas and the south is just plain old. You need to remember that there are many here on this board who reside in Texas and the south.

By the way, Houston elected a lesbian for mayor. I didn't see you expressing any pleasure in that. You just like to look at the negative.

19. Do you know something about the HCR we don't in Texas?
And if you mean that we'll actually get some increase in health coverage in Texas, why that would be a good thing. We are the state with the highest percentage of uninsured people, after all.

But go ahead, send us your jobs - we'll take them gladly.

Both our our shit for brains Texas Senators, aren't deciding squat on that bill. Seems to me you can thank Joe Lierberman for fucking it up.

22. A little known provision of the Senate Bill...
may allow Insurance companies to sell across state lines, using their "home states" regulations. So they may well "migrate" to states such as Texas, with weak consumer protections , and away from States like Minnesota with much stronger consumer protections. It will be a race to the worst coverage !!!

That would suck. I agree our insurance protection laws in Texas would not suffice for good protection for the country.

30. hello sonia,
we dont hate texas sonia, all states in the US have their own issues with reactionary policies.
as an outsider (a californian), it seems texas has more then others. so its easy to judge
your state as a leader in reactionary incidents especially with Perry and Cornyn leading the way - and of course W.
i myself apologize for any negative cracks toward Texas, peace < d

If the kids hair is a distraction the teachers aren't teaching well enough.

The boy shaves his head. donates all the hair to the charity and BOOM. He is too distracting again.
OR
A girl gets a crew cut. Will they mandate a length of hair for girls? Once you cross into the distracting hair cut idea gee wilikers all sorts of things can happen.

And yes that school official woman has an Amarillo's nest of a hairdo.:smoke:
