MSNBC Countdown w/ LAWRENCE O'DONNELL - 8 January 2009: Lawrence O'Donnell blisters Rudy Giuliani for his terror-mongering lie, the right-wing garbage talking point du jour, that no terror attacks occurred Bush's administration, but have under Obama's.

PART TWO contains the interview with Eric Burns of Media Matters from this segment, discussing why George Stephanopolous did not counter Giuliani's lie (for which Stephanopoulous later admitted error): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPQgVjDqY5M

BURNS: "This is about politics for them. It's not about national security and it's disgraceful."

DUer eleny has the Daily Kos diary posted that lists the attacks during Bush:

ost-9/11 Domestic Terror Attacks During Bush Administration

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/1/8/823179/-Post-9-1...

Sept-Oct 2001: Anthrax attacks on Congress, NY govt offices, media.

Dec 12, 2001: Foiled plot by Irv Rubin and Earl Krugel to blow up mosque in Culver City, CA, and office of Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA).

Dec 22, 2001: Shoe Bomber Richard Reid fails to blow up AA Flt 63.

July 4, 2002: Hesham Mohamed Hadayet kills 2 at the El Al ticket counter at LAX.

Oct 2002: Beltway Snipers John Allen Muhammed and Boyd Lee Malvo kill 10; Malvo later testifies attacks motivated by "jihad."

April 2003: White supremacists William Krar, Edith Bruey foiled in the Tyler Poison Gas Plot with huge stockpile of cyanide, 100 conventional bombs, and 500,000 rounds of ammunition.

June 5, 2003: John Noster arrested in LA w/cache of pipe bombs, jet fuel, weapons, and assorted books alleging a worldwide socialist conspiracy.

March 3, 2005: Mohammed Reza Taheri-azana drives an SUV onto a crowded part of campus at UNC at Chapel Hill, injuring 9.

April 3, 2006: Allen Weatherford arrested in MN with cache of weapons, detonation devices, fuel oil, and fertilizer intended to blow up a local courthouse.

July 28, 2006: Naveed Haq kills 1 and hospitalizes 5 in a shooting at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.

Aug 30, 2006: Omeed Aziz Popal kills 1 and injures 17 in SUV rampage that began in Fremont, CA, and ended at the Jewish Community Center of SF.

Dec 22, 2006: Derrick Shareef’s "violent jihad" attack on an Illinois shopping mall disrupted by feds.

Feb 12, 2007: Sulejman Talović opens fire at the Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City, killing 5, injuring 4, while shouting "Allahu Akbar!"

Not to mention the March 23, 2003 grenade attack by Army Sgt. Hasan Akbar on his fellow members of the 101st Airborne, which killed 2 and wounded 14. That particular attack is not technically "terrorism" because it involved combatants rather than civilians, but then again so did the Right's previous-favorite Obama administration attack, that of Nidal Hassan at Ft. Hood earlier this year. Funny nobody ever mentions Hasan Akbar when they're trying to claim that the Ft. Hood incident proves Obama is soft on terrorism.

TRANSCRIPT OF VIDEO:

O'DONNELL: "The party that refused to let anyone forget about 9/11 when they thought it would help them politically, has now forgotten about 9/11, hoping it helps them politically. The latest lying exploiter of 9/11 is the man who will never let anyone forget he was New York's mayor on 9/11, who could not say anything during his Presidential campaign without using the formula 'Noun. Verb. 9/11.' Less than two months after former Bush press secretary Dana Perino declared that America 'did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term,' former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani appeared on ABC, and, criticizing President Obama for not saying 'war on terror,' said this is why America has been attacked under President Obama and has not under President Bush.

GIULIANI (VIDEO): "If he recognizes we're at war with terror, a lot of things follow from that, then they're enemy combatants, they're not just mere domestic criminals, then we don't close Guantanamo... What he should be doing is following the right things that Bush did. One of the right things he did was treat this as a war on terror - we had no domestic attacks under Bush, we've had one under Obama. No. 2, he should correct the things that Bush didn't do right: Sending people to Yemen was wrong. Not getting this whole intelligence thing corrected was both Bush's responsibility and Obama's."

STEPHANOPOLOUS: "So bottom line.. the President has stepped up, he's taking responsibility, he's calling it a war. Are you satisfied now with his response?"

GIULIANI: "Now let's see what he does."

O'DONNELL: "Online, George Stephanopolous writes: 'All of you who have pointed out that I should have pressed him on that misstatement in the moment are right. My mistake, my responsibility.'

A Giuliani spokesman tells ABC he was 'clearly talking about post-9/11 with regards to Islamic terrorist attacks on our soil.' ABC reporting
that Giuliani's reference to an attack under President Obama was not a reference to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who was arraigned today in Detroit and pleaded not guilty on all six charges, but a reference to Maj. Nidal Hasan, who killed thirteen people at Ft. Hood two months ago.

Of course, not counting the underwear bomber, lets Giuliani discount the shoe bomber, whose attack DID occur under President Bush, although not, as Mr. Giuliani idiotically claimed, recently, before 9/11.

And limiting it to Islamic attacks lets Mr. Giuliani discount the anthrax mailings that killed five people, and Jim David Atkinson, the Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly fan, who shot two people dead because they attended a liberal church. And limiting it to attacks on our soil also lets Mr. Giuliani discount Sgt. Hassan Akbar, who killed two soldiers and wounded fourteen in a grenade attack in Kuwait, two days before the invasion of Iraq, a direct precedent for the Fort Hood case that Giuliani now pretends is unprecedented.

Even limiting it to Islamic attacks on our soil, Mr. Giuliani, who now makes a living on the blood of 9/11 by pretending to be an expert on terrorism, is apparently unaware of, or just lying about, the following:

- The Muhammed Atta fan who used his SUV to wound nine people in 2006 at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill to avenge Muslims, while George W. Bush was President.

- The man who called himself a terrorist after killing one person and injuring thirteen more in 2006 with his SUV in San Francisco, while George W. Bush was President.

- The Muslim shooter in 2006 who killed one and wounded five others in Seattle over his hatred for Israel, while George W. Bush was President.

- The 2002 terrorist attack on the El Al counter at Los Angeles International Airport that killed two and wounded four, while George W. Bush was President.

- D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammed convicted of terrorism in the deaths of ten people, while George W. Bush was President.

- And we must assume Mr. Giuliani does not count the 2008 attack on the U.S. embassy in Yemen, technically our soil, because the 18-year-old American woman had not yet come inside when she was killed. And yes, George W. Bush was still President and in charge of protecting our embassies in 2008."

3. K&R! And thanks! Lawrence O'Donnell has become my favorite substitute host!
He is great anytime he appears on anything and is perhaps more emphatic in exposing the truth than even KO! :woohoo: :patriot:

And it's no surprise that Giuliani is fearmongering again... That's what he does. I tried to watch as much as I could of the 2004 Republican convention, but Giuliani finally did me in... x(

19. Because the right is never held accountable. You would think the MSM
Edited on Sat Jan-09-10 07:57 AM by chelsea0011
and some cable news shows still believe that the right are tax cutters, want small government, and want to watch out for middle America when it comes to their money. It is all false. They run up the deficits, they only give tax breaks to the wealthy, and their just say no campaign on health reform shows they could care less about a large portion of the people. And the media just goes along with the myth. Look how George S. said nothing to the mighty Ghooliani.

And as an aside how the RW gets a free ride look no further than our Senate race in Massachusetts. The republicant Scott Brown has pulled within around 10 points of the leader, Democrat Martha Coakley. Well, you would have thought Brown pulled even of ahead. He gets full, lead story media coverage that he has made a race of it. And they are now acting like it is Martha Coakley who needs to respond to the challenge and pick up the pace. So why isn't the story that she is still comfortably ahead? No one can possibly say that this would be a 60-40 race with a straight race. The media is lazy. This is just where the poll numbers should be. When it is all said and down Martha will probably be a few points over 50% and Brown a few points under. Martha Coakley wasn't going to get the 60% and over that Ted Kennedy got at times. The media is lazy when it comes to reporting and they favor the republicants.

. . .it seems like they should be able to simply say "That's untrue, and i think you know it. An untruth you know is untrue is called lying." That way they're somewhat subtly callling them a liar, and don't run into the "nobody ever willing to come on the show" syndrome.

The Republicans are trying to re-write history when it comes to their record on fighting terrorism AND the economy. They failed at both. "terror" on domestic soil totally missing any and all the acts O'Donnell lists above, Only the "shoe" and "underwear" bombers were mentioned.

Only having heard it in my car I'll have to go to the NPR website and listen again, but- I'll bet Schorr could well use having this O'Donnell piece forwarded to him, in any event.

31. the GOP are at war with you.
when i see a republican on t.v.. i cant help but feel they are somehow different to me. i mean biologically different.
i think some part of their brain is the chiral opposite of my own. (i guess that makes the term left and right valid)

when i listen to someone who considers themselves left, they make sense to me. they seem to see the world as i do.
but when i hear someone on the right i.e rudy, their logic just seems totally warped, but you know the rest of them think it makes TOTAL sense.

trying to figure out what these people are collectively jerking off too in their minds is no easy feat. but if i had to guess..

leftists don't like war... applying my chiral theory... right wingers love war! the theory is sound so far.
and that is my conclusion. that these right wingers are at war with the left. whats this new thing glenn beck is starting on monday?

i think you better start fighting back.

46. I'm feeling less and less in common with conservatives as time goes on.
These are "Christians" who are against everything Jesus did and taught, "Americans" who would sell out their country in a second for money and power for themselves and their rich, powerful friends, and "human beings" without a trace of empathy or compassion for those around them who refuse to use logic or any form of thought to direct their words and actions.

What are we supposed to do with these people? I am so sick of watching America - my country - being dragged down by its dumbest, vilest, most hateful residents.

58. These people are real conservatives
I was raised by conservatives and though I disagreed with them on many issues, they were NOT like these people. Conservatives traditionally don't like a lot change and are very moderate about spending. My parents would have never condoned lying and cheating to win. My father was very active in politics and turned away from the republican party after Watergate. He felt betrayed by a party he'd supported for decades. I can't imagine what his reaction would be if he could see what has become of that party today.

62. I should have specified "today's conservatives" as the main problem.
Conservatism used to involve a semi-respectable, semi-defensible set of beliefs (albeit beliefs that, when followed, were uniformly bad for America in the long run), put forward by articulate spokesmen (in some cases, at least). But now, Holy Hannah! All I hear from today's conservatives is fear, lies, more fear, hatred of most of what constitutes America today, still more fear, crippling, inchoate rage, and of course overwhelming fear.

It makes me laugh when right-wingers prattle about liberals being "terrified" of Ms. Alaskatrash (misinterpreting our withering disdain as, what else, fear) when they themselves are bedwetting crybabies about everything and everyone that St. Rush and St. Sean happen to be "outraged" about today.

64. Yes, "fear" sums up today's right-wingers
and that fear produces the "rage". So essentially they are really reactionaries not true conservatives and their leaders are flat out deceitful, taking advantage of their fear and rage for their own personal gain. They are easily manipulated and skilled leaders will take that fear and rage and direct it towards liberals.

Traditional conservatives, if there are any left, serve a necessary balance for a healthy society. Periods of drastic change, followed by periods of calm stability allow the change to be integrated into society's consciousness. Extreme agendas, whether they are left or right, cannot be sustained for long periods of time. During any transition, there will be opportunists who will take advantage of fear for power and money. It has happened before and undoubtedly will happen again.

35. The attack on the Yemen embassy is more forgotten than Pvt. Lynch or Terri Schiavo
not that those two women were terrorists of course just that the US EMBASSY ATTACKED (remember how that used to be the worst thing ever?) totally unravels their pre-911 screed about Clinton

37. What does it REALLY matter how many each had anyways?
It's such a laughable position, if the topic weren't so serious. But even IF under Obamas term(s) we have more destructive attacks or attempts than under BushCo.'s watch....is that really the important part of the fight against terrorism?

Its like a school yard. 'you're a stinky poo', 'no you're a bigger stinky poo!'
That kind of childishness starts almost every time from the Republican side and then the Dems are caught in a dilemma. If they don't respond, the MSM takes it as a guilty plea, if they do respond, they lower themselves down to that school yard, and that's where the right wing morans like to play the most.

I wish the Dems would have hammered home the fact that Dubya and his cronies were asleep at the wheel (either purposely or not) on and before 9/11. But they are just tooooooo nice to that. And now the door is left open for the Repukes to rewrite history.

39. These facts will never sway the right wing's beliefs.
You see, when facts clearly contradict your beliefs, well, that's just a way to test how steadfast your faith is. A loyal right winger would never allow your silly facts, no matter how many or how easy to verify, to cause him a moment's doubt in whatever nonsense his party tells him to believe.

41. Whether the host be Olby or O'Donnell, this show pwns the wrong wing
Edited on Sat Jan-09-10 05:06 PM by alp227
Last month, Keith did this long special comment in a criticizing the idea of liberal media bias. (original video here)

Then, Lawrence O'Donnell (why does Keith never show up on Fridays anyways?) does something similar in response to the new right-wing pattern of rewriting the GWB years.

PWNAGE!

After the loss of his mother recently and now his father's illness, he takes the whole health care reform issue very personally. He's brought me to tears on a number of occasions.
