Journalist and author Naomi Klein spoke in New York last night and addressed the crisis in Haiti: We have to be absolutely clear that this tragedy—which is part natural, part unnatural—must, under no circumstances, be used to, one, further indebt Haiti and, two, to push through unpopular corporatist policies in the interest of our corporations. This is not conspiracy theory. They have done it again and again.

5. Is it your understanding that we cannot do both?
That we can't help while being vigilant?

Because that doesn't seem necessarily true. Or well thought out. It seems to me that we are perfectly capable of responding to a disaster while guarding against those interests who would take advantage of that disaster.

to anticipate and we know how to anticipate. We need to blast the world with a position and she has stated it. There is more work to be done. First, we let them know we are suspicious, that we are watching, and analyzing.

If only we had a fly on the wall at IMF and the World Bank, But, their and our evil history for Haiti is well known and stuff does come out. We have to start watching for the stuff and expose them.

We can start by watching the contracts for work. If the old hands in profiting are involved, we know where the work is.

Expose. Expose. For now, work on their history, not ours - their ugly inhuman histories.

In other words, I don't agree with your position. At all. Naomi Klien speaks for people with a heart and care for people and country.

save lives, assist haiti and haitians, and do ONLY that.

and also, because in general you have missed it, there is no time but NOW, to fight disaster capitalism. it makes absolutely no sense to close the barn door AFTER the horse is gone.

your cluelessness is astounding.

35. The fucking corporations are NOT waiting as Naomi points out - Stupid fucks!
Edited on Fri Jan-15-10 09:39 PM by LaPera
The corporations are working overtime to jump on this now as they do in every disaster, the corporations KNOW the time to exploit is IMMEDIATELY!! While EVERYONE is looking the other way....Thank you Naomi, you're correct!

The stupid fucks who ignore all except saying well, I, me mine, I'M sending money for food, nothing should get in the way...No it shouldn't....after all the bullshit occurs....they'll say gee how did this happen to this poor country we were sending food& supplies ...again, stupid fucks can't do two things at once, to help the people and keep the corporations from capitalizing on this disaster...no stupid fucks want to point fingers at people warning them BEFORE it's fucking too late...but stupid fucks are far too dim and get their lack of importance and ego in the way, as they believe they are oh-so-righteous...Stupid Fucks!

Everyone should give, fuck go there and fucking help out...they can use all the help they can get from EVERYONE...but don't be a stupid fuck and believe that's all they need.. not seeing ways these corporate sharks finding to profit and capitalize on the disaster years and years after it's been been over & over again in the past and no one is better for it, yet you've forgotten have the usual tunnel vision about it and go on to some more finger pointing....as you will do now.

The disaster is real and so are the capitalist corporations, IMF & World Bank...All should help out unfortunately, REALITY folks, not everyone sees it that way.... But stupid fucks ONLY see what's right in front of their faces...NEVER see the peripheral - which matters so much in the future to help and make sure a quake of this magnitude won't devastate every facet that could of been controlled and avoided...again the self-righteous are just too fucking shallow to see past the TV headlines they are seduced by oh we are helping so much, don't get in our way with facts....they really have no ideas or original thoughts of their own...Just want everyone to believe they are so fucking righteous....yet can't see the importance of recognizing the corporate fascist cannibals who will cause this to happen again and make matters worse....Thinking of two things at once dazes & mystifies these slow witted lunk-headed stupid fucks!

What is anyone doing right now, now that you've sent your donations of help and ALL your concentration is on watching every TV show (which TV certainly isn't going to tell you what Klein is trying to warn you about), while munching & drinking in your comfy living room. What are you doing tonight and the weekend (it does take long to simply think) what's so important that the self-righteous can't even think about ways to expose & fight these corporate predators that Klein (have you even read her book) speaks so expertly about?

50. Very informative post...Not. What is about to happen to the US will
make us understand Haiti even more. I answer to a higher power than the corporatists, who will get theirs some day. And even if Naomi Klein kills a relative few as a result of people listening to her and determining that they will not send money or food, she still has killed that many and will have to answer to a higher power as to who does she think she is forcing people to deny the least of these food in their time of peril. And to you, He will just rumble "tsk, tsk."

inequities and false situations in life, but at the final moment when life meets death, I will be trying to aid life, whereas people like you will allow death for basically political abstractions. For you and those like you there can never be a final judge. You are it: the decider...in reality, the noisy gong or the clanging cymbal. I suppose you have some merit somewhere. There actually may be a Vulcan.

I contend on all counts, they do.

to do that regardless of the all-knowing Ms. Klein. I would still send money even if only $50.00 of the $150.00 makes it past the carpetbaggers. You and the accusatory Professor Plum can do as you wish. Many of her messages make sense. But the frequency of those messages gives me cause to wonder if she simply grandstanding. And grandstand in the face of tragedy makes her no better than Rush Limbaugh to me. She could have intermixed a few words of compassion in her tirade against the viscious avariscious snakes. Slowly, but very perceptively, I am trusting no one anymore. Have a good day.

job if all you got out of this post was condemning Klein. You continue to show ignorance by smugly attempting to justify your comments.

a person is suffering, I try to help, whereas people like you do nothing with the abstract reasoning your help will not reach those intended for because of your latest demon, in this case Klein's corporatocracy. You always leave yourself an out, so you never have to help. It's always someone else's fault you remain impotent. Pfffth

85. My donations were gifts given through Mercy Corp. I'm just a person
not job giant corporation granting loans so that he can enslave the indigents down the road. However, many who read Klein may glean from you constant harping that no one should give ANYTHING! I hope to God that my wife or myself are in desperate straights someday our lives are not let to peter out because Klein has made statements against those that might help us. When all are the enemy, no one is friend.

From the Guardian - Our Role in Haiti's Plight

"'Those people got there because they or their parents were intentionally pushed out of the countryside by aid and trade policies specifically designed to create a large captive and therefore exploitable labour force in the cities; by definition they are people who would not be able to afford to build earthquake resistant houses.'"

45. Additionally, they were on their way to democracy and fairer land distribution ....
when Artistide was elected --

CIA coup took him out --

Clinton as I recall it brought him back once --

Then, the right wing machinery went into swing -- Aristide was Swiftboated and made

an enemy of democracy and justice -- and he was forced to leave the country.

W Bush pressed even further with injustice in Haiti for the benefit of elites.

33. Wondering about what corporatists can get out of Haiti
I know next to nothing about Haiti, but just did a quick wiki search on their economy. Does anybody have any guesses as to what might happen to a shocked Haiti? They don't seem to have any nationalized industries that can be privatized or an abundance of natural resources to be plundered. The only thing I could think of was that somehow the real estate where people live (or lived) gets in the hands of western corporations, although I'm not informed enough to surmise what they would actually do with it. Since the country itself is so desperately poor, it doesn't seem to me there's that much money that can be stolen from it.

46. Any land is valuable -- plus labor . . . enslavement --
And, naturally, the land has potential --

as someone was mentioning, if Haiti could freely plant marijuana or hemp ...

they would profit handsomely -- plus grow their own foodstuff.

1% elites control the entire nation and its economy -- land.

47. GO AWAY YOU FREAKIN' TROLLS!!! Naomi Klein is 1000% correct!
These corporations don't care about anything but their sacred dollar. They are only putting forth this facade of altruism, because it sells product.

Klein's statement is more proof that capitalism is a failed system.

70. In Ancient Greece a wealthy slave owner trained his own huge private fire brigraide
So when any wealth mansion caught fire he would negotiate to but it for a few bucks then suddenly roll out this brigaide and save it. If they wouldn't sell he just let it burn to the ground. Friends neighbors...didn't matter...nor did the destruction of priceless possessions. Many fires were started mysteriously...get the point. These people only care for profit not human life.

They need aid...not loans...volunteers not $1mil/yr blackwater security soldiers. I see clearly now that this informative and innocent video was demonized by ignorant, clueless trolls who are obviously not part of this DU community but comment under false pretense and clueless condemnation...one even speaking for the wrath of God...on Naomi Klein for christ's sake... Sickening.

...experiment like Iraq originally was meant to be. they'll be selling us on how it's in the best interest of Haiti to be a haven of dirt cheap labor enriching multi-national fat-cats. Klein is right to sound the warning and now is the time, not after when it's too late....

92. You don't get the point. It's not about not helping, it's about
helping, and seeing the profit motive of helping.
To many of us it's just morally wrong to make profits on things like this, and it's what huge corporations do all the time.

90. Haiti never had a chance to stand up. The US has always knocked it down.
Read the twentieth-century history of Haiti, starting with the Marine Corps' treatment of the people. Read how dictators have run the place with US support. Read what Clinton and Bush did to Aristide and any other leader who dared defy the gangsters. Charity is fine, but Haitians deserve their own freedom from tyranny in the first place.

Here's a thought: give a few billion usually handed out to Israel over to Haiti for a while.
