Good to see CNN trying to clear that one up. There has to be a distinction between actual looting and food liberation. Even in incidents of actual looting they need to be arrested, not shot.

2. It is SO infuriating - why is it so hard for these idiots to

understand that desperate people seeking food and water are NOT looting. Looting is taking big screen tv's, not food and water!

How can they expect someone who has gone without food and water for 5 or 6 days to NOT try to find something to eat?

if they found food rather than loot for food.

trying to return them to their proper owner when the officer arrested him"... yes, finding food is good, looking for it is bad. I've heard the stories about NOLA and what actually went on.

5. The procuring of food, water and medical supplies is not "looting"...

it is survival.

Looting is the situation when there is no necessity for the preserving of life/health. Electronics, valuables that are stolen and other items that are not necessary for preservation of life define looting. One should not be jailed for taking a loaf of bread or a brick of cheese to feed his/her family...and they most certainly should not be shot.

Every NOLA survivor I talked to praised the "looters" who provided them with water, bread, diapers and other survival necessities.

8. Oh, yeah, diapers too! Funny how when the kids are grown...

you forget those things.

Many years ago in NYC, a guy broke into a store during a blizzard to get food and some other stuff he desperately needed for his family. Since it was a "declared" emergency, if he had gotten caught, he would have been arrested, (obviously), or perhaps shot. Anyway, a couple of days later, when the way was clear, he went back to the store and offered to pay for the items he took. The cops were called, after some discussion, (the cops tried to get the store Mgr to take the money and "forget about it") the man was arrested, booked and taken to court for arraignment. The arresting cops and the guy were standing there, as the judge went over the complaint/citation, he asked the cops and the guy if what he was reading was true...all affirmed it was true. Judge looked at the man and said, (paraphrasing), "If that man is stupid enough to turn down the cash under the circumstances, I'm not going to allow his stupidity to affect this court; the court refuses to waste it's time in such a frivolous accusation, case dismissed".

Even trying to do the "right thing" can cause problems for those that try.

10. In a country as poor as Haiti, what exactly IS looting.....

To even use that term in regards to Haiti seems ludicrous.
