As Goldman Sachs announced major profits, US President Barack Obama announced a new path for financial regulation. Will Obama's tough words translate into action?

1. If teabaggers don't get behind Obama on this one....
Then they will just have revealed themselves to be truly based on only hate and fear.

I'm a long time lurker here, but this has made me sufficiently angry to sign up.

Russia Today is the State run propaganda channel of the Putin regime, created solely to "correct Western misconceptions" of Russia's growing authoritarianism under Putin. Under Putin, free speech in Russia has been decimated, state censorship is rife, and journalists and activists are regularly killed with not a single case in over a hundred having been brought to prosecution. Gays and minorities face continual threats to their lives from the police, and the Putin regime has supported neo-nazi nationalists by creating official groups like Nashi to harrass and intimidate opposition figures and human rights activitists. If you want to read chess master Gary Kasparov's chronicles of human rights abuses and atrocities in Russia, see his blog. Even more, read about the extra-judicial killings in Chechnya under Putin's "governor" Ramzan Kadyrov. Russia today is aptly named "Pravda 2.0" by Russian human rights activists. Its latest stunt was to superimpose an image of Obama over that of Ahmadinejad and ask who was the bigger threat to the world.

That ANYONE, let alone a self-proclaimed liberal would support the propaganda arm of Kremlin intent on crushing dissent and rigging elections and poisoning dissidents as far away as London is dsiturbing. Here's the Guardian on the Russia Today propaganda project.

Anyone who appears on this propaganda-network betrays the very people who risk their lives by fighting for democracy and human rights in Russia. Cenk, you're a disgrace.

But the poster above has a point. A very good one. I would just label the appearances as dumb.

Russia Today is Putins tool and tells only the story that Putin wants out. It is Fox News in Russian. If not what Fox News would dream about being. A propaganda tool of the worst and most transparent sort.
A tool controlled by a group of people that makes the average republican seem more than reasonable. Not just one Cheney, but several and worse.

Cenk and company are being used when they go on a show there. And I can't see it furthering their cause at home. I like Cenk and frankly thought he was smarter than that.

I will certainly second this:
"Anyone who appears on this propaganda-network betrays the very people who risk their lives by fighting for democracy and human rights in Russia."

That is simply indisputable in my view.

11. The awe of your argumentative skills..
..leaves me so dumbfounded that I can't really do anything but point you back to my first post.

Russia Today was created as a tool by people that are also responsible for politically (or essential anti human rights) motivated assasinations, beatings, kidnappings and general attacks on any opposition working for the very things that I would expect to be core values for most, if not all, members of DU.

If they bring you on Russia Today it is because you serve their purpose.

6. well, Hartmann is a disgrace too, then...

Anyone who appears on a network founded and dedicated to praising the Putin Regime and either ignoring or spinning its endless assaults on human rights and the rule of law is a disgrace, period.

Here's an idea. Google Stanislav Markelov. Read what he stood for and how he and his companion, Anastasia Baburova, died. There are many others like them. This is the reality of Putin's Russia, and this is precisely what Russia Today was created and funded to glorify and promote. I don't care how many "liberals" go on it. It's still snuggling up to a proto-fascist kleptocracy.

Edited on Thu Jan-21-10 08:15 PM by ihavenobias
go ahead and sign up at www.theyoungturks.com and create a thread voicing your displeasure (and no, you won't automatically be ripped, provided you make a strong case). I also encourage you send a 'tweet':

http://twitter.com/TheYoungturks

Someone else can post Hartmann's info so that you can directly voice your concerns.

10. a good suggestion,
thanks. I'm flat out tonight, but I will make time tomorrow. I'm still gobsmacked that anyone with shred of decency would be caught dead on this revolting propaganda network.

13. To label everything on RT as propaganda
Ignores that RT supplies programming and perspectives not available from other sources -

Notwithstanding Putin's record on human rights, Russia remains one of the world's two nuclear powers and holds a seat on the UN Security Council....for those reasons alone, they should not be dismissed.

I am glad the Cenk and Hartman are going to different venues it's not like Western news sources have a monopoly on the truth.

12. How Do I Get On Cenk's Show?
I present the "Keiser Report" on RT twice a week. I have found them to be of the utmost journalist integrity especially when it comes to finance stories that the MSM US press is too timid to report honestly on.

here's the ad for my RT show.

Here's my latest show:

I would enjoy an opportunity to talk to Cenk about this topic of media awareness and global media outlets.

15. you are extremely naive.
Edited on Fri Jan-22-10 05:02 PM by wairarapa
I would again suggest that appearing on the propaganda channel of a regime as despicable as Putin's is simply a betrayal of all democratic values one could hold.

I have friends in Oborona, the Russian democracy movement. They endure constant harrassment, death threats, arrests and detention without charge, beatings, and the constant fear of being murdered like so many other activists. Try to find their stories and points of view on RT and you won't have a shot. You are enabling and aiding a vile, evil regime, and you should simply be ashamed of yourself. Journalistic integrity, my ass. Why not educate yourself a bit and read about censorship on Russia's TV networks. Integrity?? Ask Gary Kasparov about how he's been represented on Russia today for advocating human rights and the rule of law. And ask why RT won't cover the raids and harrassment of Memorial, another Russian human rights group. Despite your bluster, you are lending your voice in the support of a bunch of murderers.

Again: To hear someone describe a propaganda station (and RT was explicitly set up to promote the "values" of the Putine junta) as having "utmost journalistic integrity" is revolting. Grow up. Your actions have consequences.
