I've worked a job where my supervisor was a dick about me taking a half day to be with a sick child, I cringe to think if I was still there and wanted to attend my oldest (3rd grade) parent/teacher conference, not to mention the missed hours for wages. There are so many clueless people out there.

As a teacher myself I wish we could have more parental participation but the sad fact is that there are many people out there who are barely making it. Some people are working two jobs and can't afford to take time off either job because then they wouldn't be able to pay the electric bill that month or maybe not be able to make the rent payment. Some parents have no transportation and live in areas that do not offer public transportation.

I've also been in schools that forbid parents to bring their children to these meetings. Too much commotion. Well what if you can't afford a babysitter? What if you don't have anyone you can trust to watch your children?

I wish I knew the answer to parental involvement. Our school offers parents the opportunity to view their child's grades on line. They can email the teachers with questions or concerns. That helps but some parents do not have Internet access. What then?

The fact that schools with a higher level of free lunch recipients does not mean that free lunch is the cause of the problem. So why would you punish the kids? I have students that I feed breakfast to EVERY DAY. The cereal I bring and the FRE lunch they get are the only meals that some of them get, especially at the end of the month.

While I agree that ten years old is not the optimum age for childbirth, I do wonder if this child was the victim of rape. Was this child being molested at the hands of a trusted family member or friend? He's right inasmuch as saying that a ten year old is not equipped to be a parent. Then why are we as a nation not willing to reach out and help this child. If she had wanted an abortion could she have gotten one under the "NEW Healthcare bill"? The answer is sadly no.

I doubt a ten year old said, "Hey I'll get pregnant so I dont' have to work." She's ten she probably wasn't out looking for a job.

We need to give young people more opportunities for success. We need to work as a nation to help improve our schools for ALL children. Every child is precious. EVERY child deserves a fair chance. NO child should go to bed hungry in our country and NO CHILD should be without health insurance.

73. When I did my student teaching

in West Virginia we had a girl in the school who was eleven and pregnant. It was a very tragic story. Mom and she were living in boyfriend's trailer. Mom got pregnant by boyfriend and boyfriend was going to kick them out. The boy did offer an alternative to being kicked out, allow him to have sex with her eleven year old.

The eleven year old got pregnant and that's when the school stepped in. The girl had gone to a trusted teacher and that teacher reported what was said to the proper channels. Social Services investigated but Mom and boyfriend insisted that the girl was just lying because the girl got pregnant by some unnamed boyfriend. The girl then changed her story so Social Services backed off. Now this was about 18 years ago or maybe a little more than that but back then Social Services was willing to drop the case.

It was so incredibly sad to see this little pregnant girl in the halls. She kept to herself, wouldn't look anyone in the eye, and she was locked in a prison that the adults who were supposed to care for her made.

So when I heard a ten year old I don't know that the story wasn't off by a year or maybe he back counted a year to make the story even more dramatic. I have been teaching for a long time and I will tell you that we've had children as young as twelve who were pregnant. While rare it has happened and many times it was an adult who was molesting them.

I think saying she was raped by an alien is a bit harsh. Obviously his remarks were uncalled for and beyond stupid but I still say that I have never met an eleven year old who was ready to become a mother.

Punishing kids because they are born into poverty does nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, to change the situation in which they find themselves. I repeat we have students who might only eat one meal a day and that's the meal they get at school. Maybe they should take food away from him each time stupid words come out of his mouth.

But is he interested in being helpful enough to these parents or to the children to give them some connection to the community that can supercede whatever is happening at home, the thing that, in fact he was hired to do? No. If you pay attention to the beginning, he complains about them even being allowed to vote. He wants to dehumanize them in every way possible so they can be either blamed or ignored for their own difficulties. Ten year old children! A ten year old girl, whether she is having consensual sex or has been forced, does not understand the consequences of her actions in any way. I could write a book on the reasons why, from simple child development to psychosocial stressors that create hopelessness and disconnection. But he wouldn't care.

What he is is maybe a little dense. After telling the news network that “I never intended to tie people to animals,” Bauer repeated the error by offering this pearl of wisdom: “If you have a cat, if you take it in your house and feed it and love it, what happens when you go out of town?” Consider them tied, gov.

President Harry S. Truman began the national school lunch program in 1946 as a measure of national security.

He did so after reading a study that revealed many young men had been rejected from the World War II draft due to medical conditions caused by childhood malnutrition. Since that time more than 180 million lunches have been served to American children who attend either a public school or a non-profit private school.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson extended the program by offering breakfast to school children. It began as a two years pilot program for children in rural areas and those living in poorer neighborhoods. It was believed that these children would have to skip breakfast in order to catch the bus for the long ride to school. In 1906 two books were published: Poverty and The Bitter Cry of the Children. These two books were the first to examine the link between poor nutrition and the resulting negative impact on learning and productivity. By 1913, School Lunches were operating in 30 cities and 14 states. However by 1918 and the beginning of WWI, the realization of how desperate the youth of America was painfully obvious. Enormous numbers of young men could not enter the military due to poor physical condition related to malnutrition. By 1919 2930 schools were now receiving hot lunches.

The first school lunch program in the United States started in New York, in 1853 serving meals to students attending “The Children’s Aid Society of New York” a vocational school (http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdenutritran/do... ). In 1904, Robert Hunter wrote a book “Poverty.” This book had a strong influence on the citizens of the United States who felt there was a great need to feed hungry, needy children. Hunter was greatly concerned about academic performance of children in schools. Teachers became alarmed at the number of students arriving at school without a nutritious meal because many students came from poor families who could not afford breakfast meals.

At the time of World War II, enlisted soldiers were showing signs of under weight and malnutrition. During these findings, the doctors who were examining these potential soldiers denied enlistment because of malnutrition. The Truman Administration attempted to address this problem of malnourished recruits along with other concerns about federally funded school lunch programs along with the lack of commodities providing assistance after their agreement during World War II. Congress and President Truman noticed parallels between malnutrition with young men and school lunch programs.

In 1941 America was barely more than twenty years from the First World War. People were toughened by the struggle for survival in the 1930's Depression. In 1940, 40% of draftees were rejected, most of them because of malnutrition, bad teeth and eyesight--all results of the Depression. Many new soldiers came from farms in rural America where a familiarity with guns was necessitated by subsistence hunting.

During World War II, many U.S. draftees were found to be malnourished to such an extent that they were turned down for military service. The realization of this low nutritional state of the general population led to the passage of the National School Lunch Act (NSLA) in 1946, which established the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) in elementary and secondary schools. This landmark legislation, although amended many times, continues in force today, with its original objectives still in place. These objectives are "to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation's children, and to encourage the domestic consumption of nutritious agricultural commodities and other food."
