Phil Bertelsen, director of Outside Looking In, talks about his experience as a transracial adoptee and shares a segment from his film.

1. I have 4 adopted kids of a race other than my own. These are great points that are raised.
We can't be color blind. We have to recognize the society we live in and learn how to make changes. I moved to a more diverse neighborhood before I adopted. I have family on my mom's side who I don't ever visit because of their views. (I rarely saw them anyway and now have a great reason never to see them.) I already had a diverse group of friends so my life was full of people from all walks which helped.

2. I just saw a report on the Haiti disaster concerning Adoptions
They said that some of these children were being sold as slave labor or worse
for Sex.

If there's a God in heaven then why is this happening to these poor people.
Isn't this enough !!!!

3. I'm confused:

Was Phil Bertelsen a white guy adopted by a black family? does that ever happen? I thought transracial adoptions were pretty much one way: white parents adopting black kids.

If a white kid is adopted by black parents, do the black parents have to know about "hair" and "skin", and expose their new white child to others in white culture? Sounds damn silly, if you ask me.

5. I am white, and my daughter is not.
How that came to be is nobody's business unless we choose to explain it. We live in a small Southern town. My daughter, for all practical purposes, is a white kid in a dark skin. That's the way it is. I have kicked a little white ass (both figuratively and literally) to impress that reality upon the dull and the dense. I insist that she be judged by the content of her character. Fuck the sensitive bi-racial stuff. That just panders to racists and legitimizes bigots.

7. You make a good point. Lots of children, especially here in California,
are bi-racial. They are fine.

Every child has problems. And children with step- or adoptive-parents have their problems.

This is not a huge issue in my view.

6. Easy question: is the child better off than in his/her current situation?
