CREW RESPONDS TO REP. BUYER’S RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

29 Jan 2010 // Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Steve Buyer (R-IN) announced he will retire from Congress at the end of this term. Although Rep. Buyer tied his retirement to his wife’s serious illness, earlier this week Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed complaints with the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over Rep. Buyer’s misuse of the Frontier Foundation, which was founded by the congressman. Although Frontier allegedly was formed to provide scholarships to needy Indiana students, the foundation has never awarded so much as a single scholarship. Instead, Frontier has used its money to pay for fundraisers at posh golf resorts, allowing those with business interests before the congressman – and who contribute handsomely to his campaign committee and leadership PAC – to hobnob with him.

Upon learning of Rep. Buyer’s intent to retire, CREW executive director Melanie Sloan stated, “CREW is sorry to learn of Mrs. Buyer’s illness and hopes for her full recovery. The timing of Rep. Buyer’s announcement, however, and the fact that he will remain in Congress for another year, suggests his retirement may well be tied to the OCE and IRS complaints against him and his foundation

2. His son manages the foundation.
And if he is not running due to his wife's health then why doesn't he retire now so he can spend more time with his wife.

7. Good question
I had given him a pass after the announcement of his wife's illness. Way too horrible to contemplate, no matter what the politics.

But if he really wanted to spend quality time with her, you'd think he'd resign now. A year is a long time when someone is fighting a fatal illness.

5. Good Line!
Very appropriate response. I'm sure they spent all of 10 seconds on it and buried in their news. Knowing their history, they probably put a D next to his name instead of an R. You know that's happened many times before. Just remember...Fair and Unbalanced!

6. He's a disgusting POS, same as the "enabler" who is saying they need to raise a MILLION
before they can start helping kids.

If they really wanted to help kids, they would have been doing that all along and the good publicity from that would have put them over the top in fund raising.

Just another Republican THIEF and LIAR hiding behind a charity.

Rec.

8. yes
I understand the $1 million goal to make the interest perpetuating math work properly. But they could have started with small scholarships early on and worked up to larger ones, rather than risk the exposure of high profile golf junkets with Big Pharma. Even if it is part of the fund raising process.

13. Exactly, democraticinsurgent, that is how it's done by most entities unless they are more
interested in enriching the administrators and using the coffers for other than the Charitable Works they say they aspire to do.

10. He is a crook; Demand his immediate resignation.
Or keep the heat boiling. Even though we know congress is full of crooks; A notorious crook who has been outed must be made to resign....Though who knows what travesty IN. will send to congress next.

11. Our prayers are answered!
Steve buyer is RETIRING from the Senate!!!!

This makes me very happy since i am in his district.
Good Riddance to him!

We all feel sorry for his wife and family, but the news of his finally honoring
the term limits he swore to impose on himself 18 years ago is just too great.

We have put up with this incompetent lil bush jr for far too long.
Now perhaps the country hicks in his district will elect someone
who is actually qualified to represent their interests and not someone else's !

12. Don't count on it.
This is Indiana. The capital of GOP hell. It doesn't matter how many times you bend the idiots in this distinct over, they keep coming back for more. We have three right-wing talk stations in Indianapolis and no progressive counterpart. I'm sure the local host will tell us who to vote for and 75% of the sheep here will again gladly vote for the next crook that can't wait to sell them down the river. It won't matter what a corporate pig the next piece of crap is. As long as he works God, Guns, family values, freedom, and democrats hate America into his speech he will win in landslide. He will then go on to do exactly the opposite of what God would do, secretly work to sell out your gun rights, screw around on his family, erode more of your freedoms and sell out Indiana and America to the highest corporate bidder. Then when caught he will cry for the cameras and hide behind his wife's skirt just like the piece of crap every republican politician is. Then hoosier voters will say we forgive you ,bend over and say NEXT. What do you expect? This is Indiana. A place where 3 out of four people surveyed believe Fox is news, Bush was a great Amerrrican and Sara Palin is smart.
