2. It could happen here, and I believe it is happening here.

The fact is, Germany was a highly civilized, industrialized country with an educated citizenry. They were dealing with difficult economic conditions, suffering, as were, which made them more vulnerable. Many Germans didn't like Hitler and could see he was trouble, but once he reached a certain point, there was no stopping him. He gained a foot hold by exploiting people's fears and creating a scape goats. Sound familiar? Of course, fascism in this country won't look quite the same. It will be a "softer" form.
