1. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough...
I don't see where Rick Sanchez scared anyone, did anything wrong, or any reason to watch this clip. I saw a confident news anchor who is on television almost every day ask a question and I saw a nervous scientist respond. I don't think he was scared. He just looks and sounds nervous to me. If I were on television I wouldn't be responding on my toes either.

2. The guy's a major dickhead- and likely scientifically illiterate to boot
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 07:49 PM by depakid
If it were me trying to explain something to this rude little twit, I probably would have told him to shut the fuck up if he wanted to hear the explanation.

3. I don't call that "confident". I call that rude and inappropriate. I'm
terribly sorry if I have offended you with my opinion.

14. Why would I be offended?

I believe we are allowed to have opinions here.

The question Rick Sanchez asked may not have been a great question from a scientific point-of-view but it is exactly the kind of question I would expect from someone who doesn't know the science. I think Rick Sanchez is the best CNN has and he has called Republicans out time and time again. I consider him a great asset to CNN. Sorry if I don't see more in his question than what is readily apparent in my view. I didn't find it inappropriate at all.

25. It depends on how badly I need that nickel.
In a media field as barren of objective reporters as the one we have a nickel is an amazing thing to see.

18. I like Rick but...
He can get a little carried away sometimes...Seriously, Rick went into political interrogate mode there for a bit. I don't think the scientist was scared or nervous but was more like "WTF? Dude, this is earthquake coverage not a Tea Party!"

4. Yee haw, BIlly Bob, did you see that Rick Sanchez intimidate that pointy head scientist?
It's all part of playing to the ignorant audience by making smart people look wimpy and ineffectual.

They all do it and the dumshits love it.

There's a lot of resentment of educated people in the US.

7. I was watching that live, and Rick Sanchez scared me...
and I live in Virginia. He is just too dramatic, he gesticulates too much, and he's just too weird for my taste.

8. I dunno, guys...
If you're finding anything offensive in that clip, I'd say you've got some pretty delicate sensibilities.

No one that I saw in that clip was frightened, and no one was being particularly rude, either. Sanchez was asking his question aggressively, sure--but does this really merit a video post?

10. I'm glad you did post it.
I had been watching for ten or fifteen minutes before all of this. Sanchez was just operating at hyper-speed! He always annoys me, but yesterday was more weird than usual.

God, some people around here are so uptight...

12. Thanks for pointing that out
I watched it and am really puzzled about what even the video post was about. In short, "Nothing to see here, move along"

As far as Rick Sanchez, in general, I have hated him for many years. And, although it still pains me a tiny bit to say it, I really like him now. He has ended up being one of the few folks that really ask some of the difficult questions. He had some really hard hitting interviews during the last election and that changed my opinion of him. Now, all that being said, still unsure as to what all of the whoo haa was about with this video.

17. Rick Sanchez has a history of supporting fascists...
And I don't forgive him now for his time supporting the Diaz-Balart clan. Rick Sanchez only proves that he is a puppet for whatever master will pay him.

11.  I thought iIwasn't the only one,,,
who noticed that yesterday,I was getting angry already about how animated he was acting and the way he seemed to be trying to tell the woman who was doing the weather how to do as if he knew more than her. He always irritates me with that know it all attitude...

13. i don't think the scientist was scared, but Sanchez was behaving that way the whole time
that day. he was like that with everyone. i think it was just really interested in what was going on and got very much into it.

15. Huh?
Rick Sanchez might have been a tad rude, but the question was legitimate. He just didn't allow the guest to fully explain. No one was scared or intimated. No one dumbed anything down. It was a legitimate question, and one that warrants an answer. I don't know the fluid dynamics of tsunamis. I, too, would like to know about the effect of the ebb and flow of tsunami waves. I didn't get it in this clip. But that would be my only criticism. People are reading too much into this exchange.

16. Rick Sanchez, world-class jerk

I first watched this guy on a Miami TV station when the Elian Gonzalez drama was taking place day after day in Little Havana. He was a through-and-through Miami gusano and was openly opposed to sending the little boy back to Cuba with his father.

After Elian was sent back to Havana with his father, Sanchez again made news when he was driving and killed a man in Miami. Sanchez was drunk at the time.

Sanchez during the dubya years was an apologist for the Bushistas. Now that Obama is in the White House, he professes to support him. In other words, he bends with the political winds with no shame at all.

I cannot stand to watch him.

-------------------------

More info from his bio on Wiki:

Controversy
On December 10, 1990, Sanchez struck a pedestrian, Jeffrey Smuzinick, with his car on a residential street near Dolphin Stadium .<5> Smuzinick was paralyzed and eventually died in an assisted living facility in 1995.<5><3> Sanchez had just left an NFL football game with his father when the accident occurred, and he fled the scene of the accident, not to return until hours later. Police officers at the scene later reported that he smelled strongly of alcohol, and when tested, he registered a blood alcohol content of .15. He was not charged with causing the accident, but was charged with and pleaded no contest to DUI.<5>

Sanchez's local reporting in 1999 on Miami's WSVN about the heated controversy between the governments of Cuba and the United States regarding the custody and immigration status of Elián González, a young Cuban boy who was found floating at sea after his mother died while trying to escape Cuba, resulted in many in South Florida, particularly those in the Cuban-American community of Miami, accusing Sanchez of playing the role of media agitator and fanning the flames of anti-Americanism in Little Havana.<6>

In 2009, Sanchez generated controversy via the social networking site Twitter when he wrote in his account, "do u know how much money i’d make if i’d sold out as hispanic and worked at fox news, r u kidding, one problem, looking in mirror."<7> In response, Fox News anchor Julie Banderas wrote on Twitter, "As a wise Latina woman, I have no comment other than to say...if I were Rick Sanchez, I wouldn't look in the mirror, period." A Fox News spokesman also responded with, "Everyone knows that Rick is an industry joke, he shows that he's a hack everyday. And he doesn't have to worry about working at FOX because we only hire talent who have the ability to generate ratings."
