Summary: Cenk is speaking at the Guardian's http://www.guardian.co.uk/changingmediasummit/speaker-cenk-uygur|Changing Media Summit> in London this week, so guest hosts Ben Mankiewicz (Turner Class Movies) and Mark Thompson (Fox L.A. weatherman well known for his voiceover work on Cops and a bunch of other stuff) play and discuss a clip of Glenn Beck bashing Bruce Springsteen's 'Born In The USA'. You can http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/12/glenn-beck-finally-gets-a_n_497360.html|read about it here>.

PS---TYT Network has officially launched our second show -What The Flick?! - which is hosted by Ben Mankiewicz (TCM), Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes) and Cenk Uygur ("The Young Turks"). Roger Ebert (http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2009/11/post.html|who compared Mankiewicz to a 'drive by shooting victim' because of 'At The Movies'>) sent out a tweet linking to the announcement.

40. I've never heard of that movie...
...and yet, it was in my Netflix queue.
My wife must have put it there.
I just moved it to the top.

You know, strange as this may sound, Beck is completely right about something here...

"it is time for us to wake up out of our dream state... wake up out of the propaganda..."

You go that right, Glenn.
Just not maybe in the way you think you mean.

You'll enjoy it. Although it's a relatively old movie, it also has a lot to say about the way things are today.

I'm fairly certain. Glenn Beck is a spectacle. Audiences want to know if the next show will be the one where he intentionally injures himself.

48. in an article a few years ago (after he started getting paid attention to), he said
that he wasn't liked by co-workers, had alcohol/drug problems, and after 9/11 (his own words), he "lost it" ... like the RWer who questioned Obama's reported drug use as a kid, maybe people should question whether or not Beck ever "regained" it ...

I know it was in the Akron Beacon Journal ... I would love to pull the article up again, but I don't have it scanned onto my drive, and the online archive doesn't go that far back for free ...

Glenn Beck is having a sociopath's wet dream. One who gets to play out his drama for all to see, on the teevee. In prime time.

- And I'm afraid that like his progenitor, many will suffer and be impugned by him before it's over. Let's hope it all ends, before we have to bring out the body bags.....

22. Bruce is one of the only great Americans left
It's funny enough that it's taken Beck almost 30 years to figure out what "Born In The U.S.A." is about, but sickening to me for him to trash "This Land Is Your Land." The message of Guthrie's song is obviously far too inclusive for Beck and his knuckle-dragging fans. I really wish this pig fucker would just stroke out and be done with it.

23. I suppose Beck doesn't like other Americans expressing a point of view different than his.
Beck is part of a trend in this country which is trying to discredit what happened in the 60's and 70's in America. They do not like dissent unless it is from their side and they are trying to homogenize America and get rid of every opinion or law they deem inappropriate. Frankly, they may just make inroads because many people don't care about what is really going on-they just go along.

This happens with depressing regularity - Beck says something outrageous, and the common responses are "Beck should realize that..." or "He's so crazy, maybe he'll...". It would be like calling termites destroying your house "crazy". Beck knows exactly what he is doing - he's a right wing attack dog, a fascist media shock trooper. I remember he made some enemies list which included Hitler, FDR and Tiger Woods. Most of the responses were "Tiger Woods? Is he crazy?" His real target was FDR, which went unnoticed because the Hitler - Woods grouping was so outlandish. To the lizard brain he's aiming for Beck makes perfect sense, which he knows we "liberals" don't understand. He knows we'll puff up our collective chest and say "He's crazy! I have a simple solution - don't listen to him! I listen to NPR instead!" Meanwhile, he is making inroads with his target audience.

31. Let's leave talk of violence to the right wing.
For one thing violence is NOT a solution to this fear mongering circus clown. For another thing comments like that are going to be cherry-picked by the right to (falsely) represent the "loony left" as if most progressives are in favor of violence which is obviously not the case.

Yes, Beck incites violence on a regular basis as evidenced by countless videos and audio clips, but the answer is not to incite violence in response.

51. None of us watch his show on Fox. We we watch clips that call out out his BS and lies.
Limbaugh was ignored for decades, how did that work out for us? Did he go away? Did his ratings go down?

Nope, quite the opposite. His ratings went up and up and he influenced more and more people, precisely because there was no one to challenge the nonsense he was saying day after day.

52. Limbaugh has never been "ignored"
The guy has been a phenomenon for nearly 30 years, because conservative AND liberal chuckleheads hang off his every word and repeat every outrageous statement he makes at the water cooler the same day.

"Challenging their nonsense" doesn't mean we should listen to these clowns and parrot everything they say. It's not like we don't instinctively know what Limbaugh's or Beck's opinions will be on almost any given subject, and their fans don't give a fuck about what we have to say anyway. Starve the attention whore of the attention they desperately need, and yes, they will go away.

35. Here's Why Beck is Such A Problem
Beck takes this song, which in my opinion is very much an expression of love and patriotism - painfull, confused love and patriotism during wartime - and first misinterprets it as anti-American, and then paints Springsteen with that broad brush of misinterpretation. "This is how Bruce Springsteen sees America" says Beck. In reality, whatever Springsteen was trying to convey in the song is just a small puzzle piece in one man's complex world view.

And thats the problem with Beck - he doesn't accept or understand complexities - unless they are of the feverishly complex conspiracy variety, and he doesn't understand that a person can simultaneously love their country, and still see way and means that the country can improve itslef.

Beck and his ilk are in a co-dependant relationship with America. They can't see the bad, and won't hear anyone else criticize, even while they're getting cheated on and beaten.

One of these days, Beck will come out and say "I know I should leave, but...America loves me..."

39. It Only Took Lonesome Roads 26 Years To Figure That Out
So it has finally dawned on Glenn Beck that a song that was popular during the Reagan administration wasn't the flag waving, America loving anthem he thought it was? He's had over a quarter century to listen to the lyrics. You'd think he would have noticed before now, since he's been in the goddamn radio business virtually all his adult life. Just how far is Glenn Beck's head up his own ass anyway? This is like somebody who has been a professional chef for 26 years suddenly looking up and saying "I just noticed that egg yolks are yellow." Any day now I expect him to hit the airwaves with the startling realization that "I've Got a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates, You've Got a Brand New Key" isn't really about roller skating at all.

43. And that's another thing! Leave our music alone!
The Idiot Beck's take on Springsteen has shown up many, many times in concerts across the country.
Morons at a Springsteen show - trying, vainly, to be oh so cool - will boo Bruce when he inevitably starts to talk about his ideas or beliefs. Why go to a Springsteen show if you have absolutely no idea what Bruce is all about? Actually, Bruce has toned down his rants quite a bit over the years. I recall being at a Springsteen show in the 70's when his commentaries on the state of the country were expected, long, and well-recieved. They set up and or enhanced his music. Bruce's position on matters of our state are well-known and well-established.
A couple of years ago, I attended a concert that included the legendary Country Joe (of the Fish fame). Anyone who knows who Country Joe is could not possibly show up at his show and expect him to praise GWB (it was during those dark days). Remember the Vietnam Fixin' To Die Rag??
Yet, when Joe offered his opinion, some yutz in the audience called him out. Joe shot right back: "Hey, I'm a veteran of this country (Joe served in the Navy) and I'll say what the F$@% I want!" It made for great theatre, but the point remains: Leave our music alone. It's not for jerks.
My message to all of the "conservative" idiots that think they are hip is:
Rock & Roll and American Folk music has long standed with the left. Get your own music. Go listen to Ted Nugent or someone. Leave our music alone! Our music is as much a political statement as it is entertainment. Deal with it.

45. 2 reasons:
(1) The GOPers have ALWAYS hated the counter-culture and "people" of the 60s, and Bruce Springsteen is close enough;
(2) The GOPers are mainstreaming highly extremist ideology and language; they want everybody to use it since they are best at it.

Clear enough? I'll accept my usual consultant fee unless I have to explain further.
