even though people will attempt to drive without insurance, if you get stopped or get into an accident and you have no insurance, you could have your car impounded (in California you most definately will), your license taken away and you will be fined heavily. If your car gets impounded, it's extremely costly to get it out of impound. In addition, if your don't pay your insurance and/or it gets cancelled it gets reported to the DMV and your vehicle registration gets suspended too.

I heard this from Anthony Weiner in a video clip.

The idea is that if you don't have insurance, you are effectively insured, at least minimally, by the government's promise that if you have an emergency, then an emergency can't turn you away for lack of ability to pay.

It's very difficult to get real information. If Weiner is correct then I think the penalty is OK in principle, but may still be unfair if it puts too much burden on people who are not able to pay. Too many of our taxes are regressive, forcing people with less to pay a greater percentage of their income. That's not fair in a system like ours that is designed to protect the property of the wealthy.

There is a tax penalty but that is an opt-out option if the state has a better idea.

17. Let me be more clear in my statement.

There is this mandate to have insurance but if it's more than 8% of your income you opt-out of insurance. 85% and a good majority of the 32 million people are working people and will be provided insurance by their jobs. So those people will NEVER be subject to any penalty. Secondly, it's really the employer who is faced with a penalty---and that penalty is to pay from $750-$2000 of per employee per year. So in essence it's just going to be cheaper for the employer to give their employee health care. Another thing with the tax----it's has an opt-out mechanism if the State finds another way insure people have health care.

So basically...the mandate is not mandate---it's weird because it comes across as such but logically speaking and when in action it doesn't work that way. Oh the rest of the 32 million who are just too poor will go into medicaid and that's why the funding for that has increased.
