Jury convicts all 8 defendants in Clay vote-buying case

By Bill Estep

FRANKFORT — Some of the most powerful public officials in Clay County corrupted elections in recent years, buying and stealing votes in pursuit of power and money, a federal jury ruled Thursday.

The jury convicted all eight people on trial, including former Circuit Judge R. Cletus Maricle, 66, and former school Superintendent Douglas C. Adams, 58, on a charge that they engaged in organized criminal acts to rig elections.

After a seven-week trial, jurors deliberated about nine hours before convicting the defendants on all the charges they faced, which included vote-buying, mail fraud, extortion and money laundering.

=snip=

Testimony at the trial indicated that vote-buying has been chronic and widespread in the county, to the point many people saw nothing wrong with it.

8 Found Guilty of Voter Fraud in KY

=snip=

This is a groundbreaking event. Companies that make e-voting machines, as well as election officials, have long held that no one has ever successfully tampered with these machines. No one was able to verify these clams one way or the other, thanks to the cloak of "trade secrets."

The http://www.bradblog.com/?p=7765">Brad Blog reported witness Wanda White's testimony, in which she detailed her training by Clerk Freddy Thompson on how to change votes after the voter left the booth. She was also ordered to change her registration from Republican to Democrat so she could become a Dem precinct official.

Is it possible that similar schemes were pursued in other areas? Eighteen states use the ES&S iVotronic touch-screen systems that Clay County officials manipulated. The mind reels. What if Al Gore and John Kerry had not backed down? One of those 18 states is FLORIDA. Another is OHIO.

Could http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6765">the death of Mike Connell be related to vote tampering?

2. Republicans rigging elections?
What is the world coming to? Aren't they the Party of God (Hezbollah) and moral perfection?
Shocked, shocked I tell you. Where's Dick Cheney?

3. Obama/the Dems need to do something about this...NOW!
Especially regarding "trade secrets" and voting machines. There should be no protected secrets when voting machines are involved. Personally, I've always felt we'd all be better off if we got the private sector out of this anyway. Especially when the company that makes/made them is also very active politically. Too much at stake.

Plenty of paper in FL 2000, and in OH 2004.

Could we get them counted?

5. There's NO mention of machine tampering in this article
only that the crooks took advantage of voters who didn't know how to work the machines and change the votes after the voters left the machines. That's totally different from the "tampering" you allege, and discredits your charges and the movement against electronic voting machines in general

15. Changing votes on a machine is tampering
It might not be internal tampering, but it is tampering nonetheless. Why are you so defensive of voting machines, anyway? I find it funny that you think this thread "discredits the movement against electronic voting machines in general".

Verb 1. tamper - play around with or alter or falsify, usually secretively or dishonestly;
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/tampered

to interfere in a harmful way or to alter or change improperly.

Maybe you'd prefer the verb 'manipulate', instead?

Clay Co. precinct worker testifies she stole votes

FRANKFORT --- A former Clay County precinct worker testified Friday that top election officers in the county taught her how to change people's choices on voting machines to steal votes in the May 2006 primary.

Wanda White testified that Clerk Freddy Thompson the county's chief election officer helped show her how to manipulate voting machines along with Charles Wayne Jones, the Democratic election commissioner.

18. gimme a break. I don't need a dictionary definition. Most of us think of electronic tampering when
we discuss voter machine tampering. This form of tampering could happen with any system, with paper ballots even. Clearly it is misleading to loudly claim this case as proving a voter machine tampering charge when that's not what most people associate the issue with.

7. I have a strange feeling
that fox will not be playing this story on a loop for days on end. I also have a strange feeling that if they had been nonwhite democrats they would be touting this as proof positive, exhibit A if you will, of democratic corruption. Then again, it could just be me.
It's not like fox is a neocon "war room" posing as a news agency or anything.

10. Don't be so sure
It's quite possible Fox will air the story once, "accidentally" labeling them all Democrats. I wouldn't be surprised...

8. News article from the Kentucky Herald Leader is misleading.
With one exception, the author does not identify the party affiliations of the criminals.

- Wayne Jones, chairman of the Clay County Democratic Party. Several prominent officials in Clay County schemed to buy votes in the May 2004 primary election, a federal grand jury has alleged.

16. you should have seen the republican party in Ohio scramble ...
... after the 2006 election and meet w/ their county B.O.E. heads when
Brunner (Sec. of State) told them that they couldn't take the voting machines
for "sleep overs" @ their homes, early voting was the law of the land, and
that paper ballots must be there for all voters.

I am glad these people got caught but this is the tip of the iceberg.

I hope Obama's justice dept. gets on top of this ... republicans win by
cheating.

Remember Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Theresa Lepore who
was behind the butterfly ballot she too was a republican that changed to
a democrat to help w/ "the cause."
