You mentioned Tarawa, which happened in 1943. I said in my original post that you have to go back decades to find instances in which the Marine Corps actually did something good. The present Marine Corps has besmirched the one-proud reputation of this unique branch of the military.

You say Tarawa, I say Falluja. Today's Marine Corps exists to do dirty things with minimal accountability. Ilario Pantano, a murderer, is something of a Marine Corps celebrity. And let's not overlook the Haditha Marines, guilty as hell of atrocities against civilians, and not a one of them was convicted.

As to the claim that Falluja or Haditha or any of the other shameful episodes of Marine Corps history, none of it has anything to do with American freedom.

You need to be educated more. The Marines don't make policy it just does what it is ordered to do. The Marine Corp., as is all branches, made up of people of who share differing political ideals and who realize those ideals have to be tempered with their duties even when they might disagree. Given a choice between some nutso preacher and flag-waving Marines, I think the nutso preacher does less harm. Flag-waving Marines would have us believe that it's unpatriotic to ask too many questions about what they do when nobody's watching. And they do plenty! It's too bad that we can't trust the Marine Corps to police themselves and put a stop to the atrocities.

We don't know and can't find out what the Marines did at Falluja. It was genuinely cowardly of them to order the women and children out so they could level the city. Doesn't such an atrocity trouble you even slightly? Or the well-documented massacre of civilians at Haditha. Nobody has been convicted of this latter-day My Lai incident. Doesn't that bother you? Or how about Ilario Pantano whose execution style murder of unarmed prisoners appalled even the hardened Marines who were with him? The Marines have made Pantano a celebrity. He's running for Congress!

I have to say I disagree. As a member of the canine unit with a bomb sniffing dog, one of the things my son does to preserve our freedom is to check venues, (as he did during Obama's inauguration) to make sure our elected officials and American citizens are safe during public events.

The Marines are even more gung ho, and even more willing to cover up murder. John Murtha, retired Marine colonel, was disgusted with today's Marines. He called them murderers, which is what many of them are. I won't change my mind until the Marines start punishing murderers. Nobody was punished for Haditha.
