Cenk breaks down why this is so ironic. Also, how this is actually dangerous ramping up of the incitement of Faux viewers to take violent action, similar to the nutjob who wanted to attack the Tides Foundation.

Huffington Post article on this with transcript of the Huckabee segment: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/28/tim-lahaye-evangelical-ch_n_662621.html

Huffington Post have a page dedicated to this comment from one of their readers:

“tim lahaye and mike huckabee - you are both just plain lying snakes in the grass. you are both so pathetic it is sad. your immorality has no end. your hypocrisy is shameful. and remember that every time you spout your religious lies to children, that is child abuse, and that's about as low as you can go. climb out of the gutter now, you still have time!”

1. has the USA goe insane?
Or have these maniacs always been with us, and they're getting more attention now because of the internet?

I love the internet for my own uses, but it has really opened up the woodwork.

2. These people are on prime time broadcast media
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 04:47 AM by ixion
so it's not the Internet's fault, although admittedly it gives them a platform, like it gives anyone a platform.

And yes, collectively speaking, we've lost it entirely, from what I can see.

remember Jim Jones, how about Branch Dravidian's.. they have always been around.. with the commercialization of the faith industry, thanks largely to the Hal Lindsey left behind series about 30% of americans now believe we are in the end times.. after all it is the ultimate fear "you don't want to piss off God"..

11. Jim Jones is a bad example
Edited on Fri Jul-30-10 08:59 AM by Mrdie
He praised the Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba, etc. when he moved to Guyana, and claimed to his followers that he was always a Communist who used religion to get people to support socialism. He wasn't a Democrat or a Republican, and he wasn't an evangelical Christian even at the height of his San Francisco preaching days. He was a cult leader who was reliant upon Soviet support (Guyana was pro-Soviet) for survival in the end.

See:

http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/AboutJonestown/Tapes/Tapes/TapeSummaries/352.html

Actually check out most of the tapes on here (or their summaries; especially the "News and commentary" bits), it's pretty clear Jones wasn't an evangelical: http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/AboutJonestown/Tapes/Tapes/tapes.htm

See also: http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/AboutJonestown/FAQ/q_USSR.htm

If you want more direct evidence, here's a sound clip of Jones singing the Soviet anthem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMt3nKd-QZY

The rest of your post is fine, though.

4. Well, they've always been with us...
but we haven't always had Fox News providing a platform for someone like Huckleberry Hick to trot out loons like LeHaye to spout their craziness unchallenged on cable television. Certainly, there's some crazy shit on the internet, but the internet does not possess quite that same level of legitimacy as does the boob tube. This is well-funded, professional propaganda-- Goebbels' wildest wet dream made flesh.

5. amen
no pun intended..there is so much overlap between the the christians, and the just plain crazies.. don't forget these folks have their own network besides fokkks.. you cant buy a cable package without cbn news, and at least half a dozen "christian" channels.. I remember during the campaign, when a rightie acquaintance of mine asked how come planned parenthood was a racist organization..

I patiently explained to him that the provided, services to poor people, that were not often addressed by other means, adding the canards poor were often minorities, and added, that yes abortion is a lousy form of birth control... i accused him of listening to fokkks, he replied no it was told to him by CBN.. Rat Robertson's outfit.. he proudly informed me that CBN, and Fokkks were his only sources..

9. It's not the USA that's insane, it's the conservatives!
I have never seen a group of people so willfully blind, so detached from reality. For some reason, it is important to conservatives to express their bottomless, inexplicably crippling fear by making up the worst lie they can possibly think of about their blood enemies (i.e. smart people, progressives, Obama, etc.), then convincing themselves and each other that the scary, scary lie is true, then grotesquely overreacting to the false information as it ricochets through fox "news" and other fear-mongering republican outlets.

The behavior of conservative extremists suggests that they have serious untreated mental and emotional problems. They delight in being terrified and in terrifying others. They hate anyone they see as The Other (i.e. anyone who doesn't look as if they too live in Upper Podunk). They are unable to control their overwhelming rage. They blindly, cluelessly support corporate causes that work directly against their own interests and those of their families (and ours!).

I almost feel sorry for them. Almost.

12. I find it extremely interesting that..............
the decline of the United States, correlates, precisely, to the rise of the right-wing Christian, mega Churches.

13. Sad to say....
... I know folks that buy into this kinda crap. I have to wonder if the very last humans on earth will still be clinging to the hopes for their savior's return.

15. These supposed "Christians" kill me
They don't follow Christ! Christ said pay unto Caesar what is Caesar's when talking about paying taxes. He told the rich man to give all of his money to the poor and follow him. Jesus also said it's easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Sounds like a socialist to me. And, as Cenk points out, aren't they all waiting for Jesus to come back?! Why is this a bad thing in their view?

The only real religion in America is the worship of Money. It supersedes everything. We worship the free market system and capitalism, we worship the false god of morality (defined as they want to define it, but don't put marital fidelity or discuss adultery, and let's not even talk about the ones who have secret gay love affairs), and we worship our own sense of righteousness and how godly we are, even though the bible clearly states there are none that are righteous, and that salvation is a gift of God, not of works. Many of them think it's because they are better than everyone else.

Now don't get me wrong, I happen to define myself as a Christian. But I have a hard time attending church due to the views stated above, which seem to be held by many in my small, conservative, town. If these people were really following Christ, church attendance would be through the roof and America would be a much better place to live in.
