WALLACE: Congressman — a number of top economists say what we need is more economic stimulus.

BOEHNER: Well, I don’t need to see GDP numbers or to listen to economists. All I need to do is listen to the American people, because they’ve been asking the question now for 18 months, “where are the jobs?”

Later, the interview grew a bit more hostile as Wallace tried to press Boehner on the deficit-impact of his call for extending the Bush tax cuts. “Chris, you’ve been in Washington too long because that’s all a bunch of Washington talk,” Boehner said dismissively. “I’m just asking a question, sir,” Wallace persisted, noting the exorbitant cost of extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. “This is the whole Washington mindset, all these CBO numbers,” Boehner responded.




CBO Director Doug Elmendorf — yet another expert that Boehner has praised in the past — has explained that there is “no intrinsic contradiction” between supporting more stimulus now and demanding deficit reduction later. Yale economics professor Robert Schiller writes in today’s New York Times, “We need more stimulus, not less — but we need to focus much more on actually putting people to work. … nless we take new measures, we face the prospect of protracted unemployment.”

My opponent, John Boehner, has been making headlines over the past week by highlighting the growing need to cut deficit spending. I agree that our long-term economic viability and prosperity is tied to our ability to reduce the budget deficit and begin to pay down our national debt. It is critical that as a nation, we begin to establish priorities, deciding what programs and spending is vital and what the government can do more efficiently. That is why I support President Obama's deficit commission and his efforts to go line-by-line through the federal budget to find ways to reduce our spending. That is also why I support the recently passed Pay-Go law, which requires that all new non-discretionary spending be offset with cuts elsewhere in the budget. Families across the country operate with this common-sense approach in their own household budgets every day.

If John Boehner is so committed at this point to cutting the deficit, why didn’t he vote in support of the Pay-Go law? Why didn't he have this level of commitment to reducing our debt under President Bush when he voted for an eighth time in support of appropriations bills that created more than $700 billion in annual deficits, or when he approved funding for two wars that have cost more than $944 billion that were never paid for? Why does he continue to support the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy that have added more than $1.2 trillion to the federal debt (source: MediaMatters)? John Boehner and the Republicans had control for six years, and in that time, our budget experienced the most significant flip - from record budget surpluses to now record deficits. In the eight years of President G.W. Bush, with the help of spending by Congress, the national debt DOUBLED from $5 to $10 TRILLION dollars. Why should voters trust Boehner and the Republicans to behave any differently if they were to regain control in the future? The voters of the 8th District deserve answers.

Well, it depends on whom you ask just what it was that he was reading from.

He claimed at the time that he was reading from the U.S. Constitution. You'd think with the whole House Republican
leadership standing behind him nodding in approval, that he might be correct.

Thomas Jefferson would have disagreed. Bonehead was reading Jefferson's words--from the Declaration of Independence.

And not ONE of those Republicans, who swore to uphold the Constitution, ever noticed the difference, which is
quite a dramatic indication of how much they really care for that constitution they swore so solemnly to defend.

No wonder our (Texas) school board wanted Jefferson out of our history books. He would make it EVER so much more
complicated to rewrite our history to serve Republican propaganda purposes.
