1. I really liked what Mayor Bloomberg had to say but...

The ultimate test would be what if there was a proposed Atheist Community Center with perhaps a small Natural History Museum & other interactive science exhibits for kids...I wonder if that would be allowed?

I know one thing is for sure folks would quickly forget about the Muslim Community Center!

...Atheist are by far the most hated & feared group in America. However, no one can tell you why or what they base such irrational emotions on other than the Bible tells them so.

Any opinions?

2. I don't know

I guess I would consider myself more "agnostic" than outright atheist but religion is definitely not central to my life. I got dragged to church for most of my childhood even though I came to hate going and I don't understand how/why people allow their lives to be run according to the *dictates* of ancient texts that have been translated and re-translated several different times and in several different languages and whose interpretation varies upon the person you're asking and whose context cannot be applied to modern day society. I don't begrudge people for having their beliefs and expressing them (as long as it doesn't dictate public policy) but if we are being asked to respect other people's beliefs, they ought to be respecting people whom have no religious beliefs as well. It's a two-way street often reduced to a one-way street by many people of faith.

3. Yes! I agree 100%!

It seems the Christian Right wants religious freedom to mean you free to belive what they do or you don't deserve equal protection under the Constitution.

The hoops they jump through & especially the lies they tell in order to say the Declaration of Independence is proof we are a Christian Nation is down right WRONG! UN-AMERICAN!

4. America being a "Christian Nation" is one of the BIG lies of the day

Anybody who REALLY reads about the Founding Fathers- their personal histories and, most importantly, their writings- should readily understand that they explicitly did NOT conceive of this nation as being a theocracy of any sort (for good reason IMHO) let alone endorsing one. Ours was always supposed to be a SECULAR country NOT one based on any particular religious belief system. :banghead:

And you are SO right when it comes to the hypocrisy of (mostly) Christians whom scream and holler loudly and righteously about being repressed despite their overwhelming majority status and demanding religious freedom for THEMSELVES but seeking it to deny it for people of other religions (or no religions at all).

7. As an atheist, I don't feel as hated as I would if I were Muslim.

I think there's no plans for an atheist center, by the way, since atheists would simply be building a human being center, and letting other people people believe in whatever mythology they want to believe in.

Actually, ANY community center that has nothing to do with religion could be called "atheist", boys and girls clubs, VFW, whatever.

I have no problems with any religious group building something for the benefit of the community, or for a certain part of the community, in accordance with non-discrimination laws that apply.

Actually, I find more people curious about atheism than about Islam, but then again, most people I meet and talk to are not interested in Islam. They have their own religion already, and are questioning why the rest of the world doesn't think like they do.
